Competing for the Deacs Trailblaizers on the Track
In his final regular-season showdown, senior Rynard Swanepoel is set to race in the 1500 meter for the second time during his 2025 campaign. He last competed at this distance was at the Duke Invitational, held April 10-12, where he clocked 3:45.56.

During his last outing on April 18 at the Wake Forest Invitational, the South African standout finished the 800m in electric fashion, clocking a blazing 1:46.36 to earn an impressive runner-up spot.

In the 800m, Swanepoel currently leads both the ACC and Southeast Regional rankings and holds the No. 9 spot nationally.

Joining him on the track is fellow senior Emma Douglass, who enters the 1500m with serious momentum. At the Raleigh Relays (March 27–29), Douglass posted a personal-best 4:19.73 and in her last outing, she shattered a 22-year-old school record in the 800-meter, storming to a 2:03.49 finish that toppled Nikeya Green's 2003 mark of 2:04.46.

That performance marked her second school record of the 2024–25 campaign. Earlier this year, Douglass etched her name in the record books at the Eagle Elite Invitational in Boston on Feb. 14, breaking the indoor 800-meter mark with a 2:03.95.

In the latest NCAA Division I Outdoor Rankings, Douglass sits No. 28 nationally and No. 15 in the East in the 800. She also ranks No. 8 on Wake Forest's all-time outdoor performance list.

Graduate Rylan Engels is also trending upward, returning to action after a personal-best 4:16.37 in the 1500m at the Wake Forest Invitational on April 18. Engels will shift focus to the 800m this weekend, where she holds a PR of 2:07.26 set at the 2025 Duke Invitational—good for No. 8 on the program's all-time list.

Sophomore Elizabeth Whaley, fresh off a victorious season debut in the 1500m at the Charlotte Invitational on April 25, crossed the line in 4:20.83. Now, she looks to keep that momentum rolling as she eyes a spot at NCAA Regionals.

On the Hunt

Freshman JoJo Jourdon is set for his second 1,500-meter race of the 2025 outdoor season. He turned in a strong 3:44.75 at the Duke Invitational earlier this spring.

Jourdon will be joined by sophomore Bryce Gilmore, who is also stepping up to the 1,500 for the second time this season. Gilmore is aiming to better his personal best of 3:47.18, also recorded at the Duke Invitational.

After making his debut in the 3000m steeplechase at the Wake Forest invitational on April 18, sophomore Hunter Jones will look to improve on his time of 9:10.71.

Making her second appearance in the 5000m for the 2025 season, sophomore Angelina Perez looks to build on her last performance at the Wake Forest Invitational where finished in 16:32.39. Teammate and sophomore Katherine Lawson joins Perez for her 5000m debut.
