The duo helped Germany finish the group stage undefeated, finishing at the top of the table.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest field hockey sophomores Lena Keller and Mia Montag continued the program's strong run of success at the national team level, helping Germany to a second-place finish at the Four Nations Tournament in Berlin, Germany.
"We're incredibly proud of Mia and Lena for competing on the international stage with Team Germany," head coach Jen Averill said. "Their commitment, composure, and competitiveness reflect the highest standard of our program. It's exciting to see them thrive in that environment, and we know the experience will elevate not only their individual play but also our entire Wake team. Our program has a long tradition of producing athletes who excel at the national and international levels, and Mia and Lena are carrying that legacy forward with distinction."
Keller and Montag helped the German side to a 2–1 opening victory over Australia, followed by a 2–2 draw against India (with a shootout win), and a 3–2 win over Spain in the group stage. The German side fell 2-1 to Australia in the final match of the tournament.
As a freshman for the Demon Deacons, Keller appeared in 16 matches with 15 starts. The Berlin native scored her first career goal off a penalty corner against Kent State and added her second of the year against Louisville.
Montag started all 18 matches in her first season in the Old Gold & Black and was one of just 10 ACC student-athletes to record six or more assists. She scored in back-to-back matches at App State and against VCU. The fellow Berlin product closed the year strong with five assists in the final 10 matches, including a career-high two assists against Kent State. She led Wake Forest with a .692 shot-on-goal percentage.
The pair continues a strong summer for the Demon Deacons at the international level.
Most recently, rising junior Ava Moore and incoming freshman Calista Boos were selected to compete in the 2025 Senior Nexus Championship (NXC).
With seven caps at the junior level, Moore was also selected to the Team USA Women's 2025 Junior Pan American Games set to take place in August.
Boos was named to the 2025 U.S. U-18 Women's National Team back in February.
At the senior level for Team USA, rising junior Mia Schoeneck helped Team USA to a fourth-place finish at the 2025 FIH Nations Cup. Schoenbeck earned her first start and scored her first goal at the senior level in the tournament.
The 2025 Wake team returns 60 of its 80 points (75.0%) from the 2024 season. All three student-athletes who reached double-digit points return, as Lauren Storey (17), Faye Janse (14) and Montag (10) look to build on outstanding campaigns a season ago.
Fans will have 10 opportunities to see the Demon Deacons in action at Kentner Stadium during the 2025 regular season. Wake Forest opens the 2025 home slate against Longwood on Sunday, September 7 at 1 p.m. ET.
