Evie Oxford and Nevena Carton earned wins in the road defeat.
NORFOLK, Va. – Wake Forest women's tennis (3-3) fell, 5-2, against Old Dominion in its third road match of the season on Saturday. The Deacs' "roller coaster" season, as coach Wyshner put it, continued, and they will return home to attempt to eclipse the .500 mark on Thursday.
The Monarchs' No. 20 doubles pairing clinched the doubles point early. Old Dominion proceeded to win the first four singles matches of the day to earn its first win of the season.
After Old Dominion secured the victory, the Deacs managed to salvage a couple of hard-fought matches. Freshman Evie Oxford was the first to pick up a point for the Deacs; she came back to defeat Uladislava Manzhos in a third-set tiebreaker, 10-8. Oxford improved to 4-1 in singles this season, co-leading the team in wins and win percentage (.800) with junior Sankavi Gownder.
Senior Nevena Carton was another bright spot for Wake Forest. She and Kady Tannenbaum finished their doubles match tied at four apiece with Old Dominion's No. 66 doubles pairing Victoria Matasova and Kira Matushkina. She then went on to win her singles match in three sets. Carton now has 51 over the course of her career – good for most on the team.
The Deacs will have a chance to bounce back on Thursday, Feb. 12, when they host Memphis at 5 p.m. Following that match, the Demon Deacons will play four more home matches before heading out west to take on Stanford and Cal in ACC play. Wake Forest is undefeated at home this season (3-0) and will look to keep that streak alive over the next couple of weeks.

From Coach Wyshner
"Rough day. We weren't ready to play today and that's frustrating. So far, this year it's been a roller coaster of playing pretty well and then having a flat effort on the road. Hopefully we can figure it out."
