Demon Deacons Participate in the UVA Fall Invitational

Charlottesville, Va. - The Wake Forest men's tennis team began the fall season of play at the 2004 UVA Fall Invitational this past weekend. Todd Paul, seeded No. 8, led the Deacs in the Flight A Singles by reaching the semifinals. Paul defeated players from VCU, Virginia, and the No. 1 seeded Izak van der Merwe from Old Dominion. Paul's winning streak was put to an end by Somdev Dev Varman of UVa in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Andrew Hamar advanced to the second round of the Flight A Singles, only to be defeated by VCU's Arnaud Lecloerec, 6-2, 6-3. In the Singles Round 2 backdraw finals, Hamar defaulted to Sean Kelleher of William and Mary. Wake's Derrick Spice and Brett Ross bowed out in the first round of the Flight A Singles. Spice defaulted due to a shoulder injury. Ross advanced to the finals in the Flight A backdraw, where he was defeated by Harvard's Martin Wetzel in three sets.
In the Flight B Singles draw, Joe Bates advanced to the quarterfinals, only to lose to William and Mary's Alexandru Cojanu in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. Wake's John Schults was defeated in the first round, and then was defeated in the finals of the Flight B backdraw #2 by Nate Grover of ODU in two sets, 7-5, 6-2. Charles Sartor advanced to the quarterfinals after winning two matches that ended in three sets; Sartor lost in the quarterfinals play to Shantanu Dhaka of Harvard, 6-2, 6-3.
Wake Forest's doubles teams had outstanding runs in the Flight A and B Doubles draw. The team of Todd Paul and Andrew Hamar reached the final match of the Flight A Doubles, and then lost to the team of Chu/Kumar of Harvard, 8-4. John Schults and Brett Ross were defeated by a doubles team from Boise State in the first round. Schults/Ross advanced to the semifinals of the backdraw, and then lost to Klemann/Vaughan of BSU, 8-6.
The doubles team of Charles Sartor and Joe Bates reached the finals of the Flight B Doubles. Sartor/Bates lost to Zink/Shaw of NC State in the final match, 8-4.
The next scheduled appearance for the Deacons is at the All-American Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn., from Oct. 1-10, 2004.
