This past weekend we took to the road, again, traveling to Columbus, Ohio and Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Although the drive to Columbus, Ohio is around 7 hours, bus trips are one of the great advantages of being on a collegiate sports team.
One of my favorite things about playing hockey is the ability I have to visit college and university campuses I have never before seen. Also, we get to see cities that, had we not played a sport, we might not have visited. This weekend we got to see some of Athens, Ohio when we stopped for lunch on the way to Columbus. We were able to see how quaint Athens is with its cobble stone streets. Of course, planking and gargoyling made a reappearance after spending 5 or so hours pent up in a bus.
Columbus was also exciting to explore. A couple of us went with Coach Averill and Coach Morgan to a local market. Coach Averill found the market on a side alley during her morning run. It had a couple of stands with fruit, vegetables, and baked goods, as well as a couple of stands with jewelry and clothing. The market was one of the neat places in Columbus for me because I was able to buy some delicious banana bread from some Amish.
Although exploring the cities is a great side to college sports, being on the bus is probably the best highlight of the trip (besides playing, of course). Bus trips are an opportunity to bond with teammates. On a 7 hour trip you cannot help but get to know one another. Whether it is from watching all of season 2 of The O.C. or playing The Witch, bus trips help teammates share laughter and stories between people brought together by a sport.
Lucky for us, we will head up to Maryland and Delaware this weekend for our second round of bus trips. I'm sure the trip will bring us closer as a team and bring some W's.
