Merckle Takes Third in Javelin at Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, Penn. - Wake Forest throwers finished up competition at the Penn Relays on Saturday after a successful weekend of competition.
On Thursday, Jessie Merckle competed in the women's championship javelin throw and finished third, with a mark of 49.19m (161-4). Teammate Casidy Callahan also competed Thursday in the women's discus throw, finishing in sixth with a mark of 48.37m (158-8). That throw nearly beat her personal best, which she set earlier this year at the Florida Relays.
John Maurins set a new meet record and his own personal best with a first place finish in the men's shot put. Maurins, a freshman, threw an 18.63m (61-1.5), smashing the previous Penn Relays record of 18.46m (60-6 3/4).
Charlie Ionata wrapped up competition for the Demon Deacons by competing in the men's championship hammer throw. The Wake Forest record-holder finished fifth overall with a mark of 62.51m (205-1).
