RICHMOND, VA- 14th-ranked Wake Forest (8-8) dropped its final road contest of the season 3-1 to the VCU Rams (10-6). Senior Jule Grashoff scored late for the Deacons on a penalty corner, but early momentum helped the Rams to the win.
VCU came out of the gates hot as senior forward Emily McNamara put the Rams on the board just one minute into the game as she dribbled around Wake Forest keeper Isla Bint and took a shot near the goal post that found the back of the net.
Both defenses battled for the remainder of the half as neither team scored for the next 34 minutes of play. The Deacons out-shot the Rams 5-1 in the first half and put four shots on target, but VCU keeper Sasha Elliott made four stops to hold Wake Forest scoreless as the Rams took a 1-0 advantage into the half.
In the second period, McNamara scored her second goal of the day in the 51st minute and a penalty corner goal at the 58-minute mark from Jordan Rasure gave the Rams a 3-0 lead.
Just three minutes later, Wake Forest answered back converting on a penalty corner as Jule Grashoff scored her 14th goal of the season with assists from Megan Anderson and Veerle Bos to cut the deficit to 3-1.
The Deacons were allowed seven penalty corners, but only converted one shot as Elliott made seven saves on the day.
Up next, the Deacons return home on Sunday, Oct. 28 to face Davidson in the regular season finale against Davidson on Senior Day. The match is set for 1 p.m.
