Sophomore Anne van Hoof scored the golden goal for the Deacons in double overtime to advance Wake Forest to the Semifinals of the NCAA Tournament
DURHAM, N.C.- A tip-in from Anne van Hoof from Emily Adamson in double overtime pushed No. 12 Wake Forest (13-9) over No. 3 Duke, 1-0 to send the Deacons to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament in dramatic fashion.
Both teams' defenses were on fire throughout 80-plus minutes of action. The Blue Devils out-shot the Deacons 15-5, but Wake Forest held strong, led by defender Veerle Bos. Goalkeeper Isla Bint made four great saves in the cage to hold the Blue Devils at bay.
"Resilience. I am just so proud," head coach Jennifer Averill said. "We started off flat, but they got it together and had some composure and made some really good decisions. I think that (Veerle) Bos held her own in that leadership role at the point, but she had some support back there as well and I have to give credit to the entire squad. We were under a lot of heat and sustained it. It is so awesome because I love the fact that sport can teach us different values and the resiliency to weather the storm and keep persevering is evident."
Duke (16-6) controlled offensive possession as Margaux Paolino and Rose Tynan each got off five shots, with one on goal apiece. Erin Scherrer threatened with two shots on goal, but Wake's line of defense kept the game scoreless.
Senior Jule Grashoff led the Deacon offense with three shots, two on target, but Sammi Steele made timely stops for the Blue Devils in the net. Wake Forest was only able to get one penalty corner opportunity, but could not convert on the shot.
Duke was awarded a penalty corner in the opening minutes of the first overtime, but the attempt went just wide. The Blue Devils posted two more shots in the first OT, but Bint made a clutch save in the cage, while the second attempt went high for Duke, forcing a second overtime period.
With seven minutes remaining in the second overtime, Adamson set up on the right side and passed the ball to van Hoof who was surrounded by a few Duke defenders just outside the net. Van Hoof got just enough on the ball to barely squeeze it over the line for a Wake goal. After review, the goal stood advancing Wake Forest to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008 with the 1-0 shutout victory over third-ranked Duke.
Wake finished 2-1 against the Blue Devils this year, falling in the regular season, but picking up two vital wins in post-season play.
Up next, the Deacons will move on to face ACC foe and top-ranked North Carolina in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m., in Louisville, Ky.
"We have had our ups and downs and haven't been as consistent as we wanted, but as you look back everyone is a Monday morning quarterback and it's all about the lesson that you learn and how thick your skin is and how you can continue to persevere," Averill said. "That's what this year has taught them. They came in here with their hair on fire and they are continuing to see how long they can last. I am so incredibly proud of them."
