Wake Forest Falls to North Carolina

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Wake Forest field hockey fell to reigning national champion, North Carolina 5-0 on Friday evening at Karen Shelton Stadium.
"We were really outplayed defensively and offensively today," head coach Jen Averill said. "And those are the results you get when that happens. It was just a lack of fundamentals. When you give a good team like Carolina those opportunities, they finish inside the attacking circle."
The Tar Heels (7-1, 4-1 ACC) came out aggressive earning three consecutive corner opportunities in the first two minutes of action and scored their first goal on the third attempt. Just one minute later, another Tar Heel penalty corner put UNC on top 2-0.
Wake Forest (2-7, 1-4 ACC) sophomore Nat Friedman worked the ball past the keeper on a deflection following a Demon Deacon penalty corner in the 17th-minute, but the goal was waived off, keeping Wake Forest off the board.
North Carolina extended its lead 3-0 in the second quarter with an unassisted goal from Meredith Sholder.
Neither team managed a goal in the third quarter, but the Tar Heels took a 4-0 advantage in the 47th-minute with Erin Matson's second goal of the day. She completed the hat trick with her third goal in the 54th-minute to hand North Carolina the final 5-0 lead.
Anne van Hoof had a team-best three shots for Wake Forest, while seven Deacons had one shot a piece. Ally Butler and Tori Glaister each had one save in the cage. Glaister made the start and turned goalkeeping duties over to Butler for the second half.
Action continues the road for the Deacons on Sunday as Wake Forest faces Boston College at noon on ACC Network.
