No. 15 Demon Deacons Shutout Davidson, Earn 5-0 Victory on Road

10/17/2021 4:10:00 PM | Field Hockey

Led by Hannah Maxwell’s second hat trick of the season, the Demon Deacons outshot the Wildcats 25-0.

DAVIDSON, N.C. -  The No. 15 Wake Forest field hockey team earned a shutout victory on the road against Davidson by a final score of 5-0 on Sunday inside Carol Grotnes Belk Turf Field.

No. 15 Wake Forest (6-7, 1-4 ACC) applied pressure early and often on both the offensive and defensive ends, controlling possession for most of the 60-minute match. 13 Demon Deacons took at least one shot for an overall tally of 25, the second-highest mark this season (27, UMass, Sept. 19), while blanking Davidson (2-12, 0-4 A10) in the shot column.

The last time Wake Forest pitched a shutout was against Boston College in the squad's spring season opener on March 6, 2021.

Hannah Maxwell notched her second hat trick of the season as the sophomore found the back of the net in the second, third and fourth periods. Maxwell has now scored a career-high seven goals this season, good for second on the team.

Eleanor Winants (second period) and Grace Sambrook (fourth period) each found the back of the net for the first time in the 2021 campaign for Wake Forest's first and final goal of the match.

Nat Friedman added another assist to her team-best total (seven) on the Demon Deacons' second goal while Ashley Hart dished out her first career goal in the 45th-minute.

Sophomore goalie Tori Glaister earned her sixth win of the season, playing 45 minutes in goal. Junior Sloan Isen made her Wake Forest debut, taking over the goalkeeping duties at the end of the third period.

How It Happened

  • Wake Forest applied the pressure from the jump, possessing the ball on their side of the field for much of the first five minutes.

  • Maggie Dickman fired the first shot of the match at the three-minute mark.

  • The Deacs took a trio of penalty corners in a three-minute span.

  • Grace Sambrook found Ashley Hart at the front of the net with just six minutes remaining in the first period, but the freshman's attempt was saved by Davidson's goalkeeper.

  • The teams remained scoreless after the opening 15 minutes of game action. Davidson did not attempt a shot in the first, as the Deacs possessed the ball for much of the period and tallied seven shots of their own (four goal) as well as notching five corners.

  • Eleanor Winants got Wake Forest on the board four minutes into the second frame to give the Deacs a 1-0 lead.

    • Winants stole a Wildcat pass and moved just inside the circle before firing the ball past Davidson's goalie.

  • Just three minutes later, Hannah Maxwell tapped in a Brooke McCusker shot to add to the Wake Forest  advantage (2-0). McCusker fired a shot after rebounding a saved shot from Elisha Evans

  • After Maxwell's score, the Deacs attempted three more shots, but were off the mark as Wake Forest took their 2-0 lead into the intermission.

  • The Deacs held substantial advantages in shots (15), shots on goal (10) and corners (8) as the Wake Forest defense still did not allow Davidson to get a shot off.

  • Maxwell increased the Demon Deacon lead to 3-0 just over a minute into the second half as Nat Friedman dished out a pass through a number of Davidson defenders to the sophomore in front of the net.

  • Ashley Hart drove the ball on the endline and found Hannah Maxwell, who tapped the ball into the back of the net for her third goal of the match and put the Demon Deacons up 4-0.

  • At the 57-minute mark, Grace Sambrook fired a backhand shot into the back of the net for the final score of the match, giving Wake Forest a 5-0 non-conference victory.

Quotables
Head Coach Jennifer Averill
- "Overall, I'm just really pleased. In this game, our team valued and appreciated that sometimes simple is better. The second quarter, we really just started moving the ball a lot better. Good things happen in our structure, our ability to frame the cage and finish when we do that. 13 people took a shot. That's growth right there. I'm optimistic for the weekend ahead of us."

Up Next
The Demon Deacons will close out the road portion of their regular season slate with non-conference matchups at VCU (Friday, Oct. 22) and Richmond (Sunday, Oct. 24).

Wake Forest welcomes Boston College in their regular season finale on Friday, Oct. 29 at 4:00 p.m. inside Kentner Stadium. Prior to the match, the Deacs will honor seniors for their contributions to the Wake Forest field hockey program.
