DURHAM, N.C. - The No. 15 Wake Forest field hockey team picked up a 3-1 victory over No. 17 Duke on Friday evening at Jack Katz Stadium in their Atlantic Coast Conference opener.
The Deacs (3-3, 1-0 ACC) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in consecutive games thanks to first-period goals from junior All-American Meike Lanckohr, the second multi-goal game of her career.
The Blue Devils (2-4, 0-1 ACC) answered in the opening moments of the second period before freshman Brooke McCusker upped Wake Forest's lead to 3-1 as the Deacs converted their fourth penalty corner at the 28:15 mark.
Junior Nat Friedman registered an assist on McCusker's second career goal to increase her season assist total to a team-high tally of four.
Sophomore Tori Glaister tallied a season-high tying three saves for the third time this season in her 10th-straight start at goalkeeper. Her last save of the game came on the first of three Blue Devil penalty corners in the fourth period as the Deacs blanked the Blue Devils in the second half.
Glaister has now made at least two saves in 12-consecutive games.
After a 12-7 advantage in the conference opener, Wake Forest is now outshooting opponents 76-28 over the last four contests.

The Blue Devil penalty corners marked the final threat of the contest as both teams continued to battle over the next 14 minutes of play before the Deacs were able to secure the 3-1 victory in their first conference match of the season.
Quotables
Head Coach Jennifer Averill - "As a staff, we summarized to the players that our structure defensively put us in a position to take advantage of opportunities and created a lot of counters for us.
"Just super proud of every line's discipline, knowing what their job was and doing it really well. The second thing I'm proud of is not going away from what works, what is successful. I'm super proud of this group."
The Deacs return home for a pair of matches against UMass (Sunday, Sept. 19) and Virginia (Friday, Sept. 24) at Kentner Stadium. The UMass match will mark the second of three ACC Network broadcasts on the 2021 slate.
