Wake Forest Welcomes Back-to-Back Doubleheaders

The Demon Deacons are set to host Davidson and Gardner-Webb on Wednesday and Georgia Southern and Charlotte on Thursday.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 10 Wake Forest men's tennis team continues its eight-match home stand Wednesday and Thursday with a doubleheader in consecutive days against Davidson, Gardner-Webb, Georgia Southern and Charlotte. 

The first match on Wednesday is slated for 3 p.m. ET, while second match is set to begin at 6 p.m. ET. Thursday's matches begin at 3 p.m. with the final match tips off at 6:30 p.m. All matches will take place inside the Indoor Tennis Center, free to all fans.

FAN INFORMATION
All patrons ages 12 and older will be required to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination OR a negative COVID-19 PCR or rapid test taken within 48 hours of the event in order to enter the Indoor Tennis Center.

Fans attending matches at the Indoor Tennis Center are encouraged to arrive early with the addition of the following health and safety measures.

Prior to entry, fans must either:
  • Show their vaccination card or photo or digital image with name and dosage history.
    • Digital or photos of vaccination cards are acceptable.
 OR
  • Show their printed or digital negative COVID-19 PCR or rapid test.

Individuals who cannot provide proof of vaccination or a valid negative COVID-19 test according to the conditions outlined above will not be allowed to enter Wake Forest Athletics indoor events.

LAST TIME OUT
On Saturday, the Demon Deacons took down Coastal Carolina 7-0 and Elon 7-0.

In the first match against Coastal Carolina, the Deacs battled through the doubles point, before gathering triumphs from Matthew Thomson, Taha Baadi, Rrezart Cungu, Robert Maciag, Juan Lopez de Azcona and Melios Efstathiou to capture a 7-0 sweep.

In the second contest, the Deacs once again ran through the doubles point, before dominating in singles to capture their fourth shutout of the season.

SCOUTING DAVIDSON
Wednesday's matchup with the Wildcats was originally scheduled Monday but it was moved due to weather. The meeting will be the 21st battle between the Deacs and Wildcats in a series dating to 1971. Wake Forest owns a 18-2 series edge, with wins in each of the programs last 17 meetings. The last time the teams met was twice in 2021, both contests that finished 7-0 in favor of Wake Forest.

SCOUTING GARDNER-WEBB
The Deacs hold a perfect 4-0 series lead over the Bulldogs and have only given up two points. In 2019, Wake Forest cruised past Gardner-Webb, 6-1, as the Bulldogs went on to finish the season with a record of 13-8 (7-1 Big South) and were 4-6 in road matches.
 
SCOUTING GEORGIA SOUTHERN
Thursday's encounter will be the sixth between the Deacs and Eagles in a series dating to 1972. The most recent matchup between the programs was an 8-1 win for the Demon Deacons in 1976

SCOUTING CHARLOTTE
Thursday's night match will be the 14th all-time meeting between the Deacs and 49ers, with Wake Forest leading the series with a record of 12-1. The teams' first meeting came in 1974, a 9-0 Deac win. The two squads met last season, the Demon Deacons took that match, 6-1.

RANKED DEACS
Finding themselves in the singles rankings were Filippo Moroni (75), Jakob Schnaitter (85), Taha Baadi (100) and Robert Maciag (117). In doubles, Siddhant Banthia was ranked twice as Banthia and Schnaitter were at No. 19, Maciag and Ben Draper were No. 26 and Banthia and Juan Lopez de Azcona claimed No. 50.
 
SIX NEWCOMERS
The Deacs welcome six newcomers to the 2022 squad, three by way of transfer and three freshmen. Vikas Deo, Adam Duan and Togan Makzume serve as Wake Forest's trio of freshmen, while transfers Ben Draper (California), Jakob Schnaitter (Azusa Pacific) and Jurabek Karimov (Uzbekistan) each call Winston-Salem home.
 
HOME DOMINANCE
Since head coach Tony Bresky took over the reins in 2011, the Wake Forest men's tennis team has boasted a 153-23 mark in Winston-Salem. Since the 2016-17 season, the Demon Deacons have posted a remarkable 83-4 record in the friendly confines of the Wake Forest Tennis Complex. 

UP NEXT
The Deacs return to action with the first road match of the season as they take on fourth-ranked Tennessee Sunday, Jan. 23 at 1 p.m. ET, respectively.
