Good Morning Demon Deacon Nation!
Happy #WFFriday! I trust you have your Demon Deacons attire on wherever in the world you might be and are ready to catch a big weekend of Wake Forest sports in person, via ACC Network and ACC Network Extra or, like me, all three! Let's begin chronologically as we will host our 48th Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony tonight in the Sutton Center.
Before I share with you the star-studded inductee list, I want to thank our special events staff, led by Maddy Overbey, for their hard work and preparation in making this event happen. And, we appreciate Joe Cassidy and his outstanding Wake Forest Wellbeing Center staff who manage the Sutton Center. They also provide a fun home court advantage for Wake Forest volleyball inside Varsity Arena where our eight matches thus far have featured record-breaking crowds and recent big wins over North Carolina and NC State!
Tonight's Hall of Fame inductees include four-time track & field All-American Trina Brindel, two-sport letter winner in baseball and basketball Alton "Tunney'' Brooks, Arnold Palmer Award recipient and former quarterback Mike Elkins, long-time athletics administrator, coach and football alum Bill Faircloth, four-time All-ACC women's soccer selection Emily Taggart, and our athletics director emeritus Ron Wellman. Additionally, Barbara Trautwein will receive the Gene Hooks Lifetime Achievement Award for her nearly 40 years of service to the music department and athletics bands. As a senior in 1993, I took her introductory trumpet class so I can't want to give "Mzeztee" a hug tonight!
Click here to read more about this incredible group of Demon Deacons which features 10 All-America selections, six First Team All-ACC honorees and multiple broken school records.
With four of our teams in action on the road today and perfect fall Saturday at Truist Field awaiting tomorrow, let's get to the rest of the updates!
Rested Demon Deacons Set to Host Boston College at 3:30 PM on Saturday
Along with most of our students and world class faculty, our football student-athletes enjoyed their fall break which enabled many to get home and spend time with their families. The first six weeks of the season were a sprint for our coaches and players, highlighted by a win on the road over a ranked Florida State team that helped our 5-1 football team ascend to No. 13 in national polls. Additionally, Truist Field hosted three-straight sellout crowds for the first time since 2011!
Limited tickets remain for Saturday's 3:30 p.m. kickoff against Boston College, so call the Wake Forest Ticket Office at 336-758-3322 or click here to purchase a four-pack ticket package and a parking pass for just $89. The Farm Bureau DEACTOWN Fan Zone includes live music, inflatables, games, activities, food trucks and more! It's fun for the whole family, so come out and enjoy the Best Fan Experience in North Carolina.
Don't forget the 'One More Rule' as there are only three more opportunities to experience Atlantic Coast Conference football inside Truist Field this fall. Our students have taken this motto to heart as we are averaging 3,761 young men and women at each game. They have set the tone for our crowd that has propelled our gridiron Deacs to a 18-3 record at home since 2019.
Basketball Takes Center Stage in Charlotte at ACC Tipoff
It was an exciting two days for our men's and women's basketball teams in Charlotte at the annual ACC Tipoff. Part of providing a World Class Student-Athlete Experience is providing our student-athletes with a stage to represent our University and show off their character and poise in front of a national audience. Coach Steve Forbes and Megan Gebbia are doing a great job leading our programs with a special commitment to developing well-rounded men and women.
We're just over a week away from hosting Winston-Salem State for exhibition games on Oct. 30 and Nov. 1! Make plans now to come support the Deacons inside Joel Coliseum and remember, the 'One More Rule' applies to basketball too! Wake Forest women's basketball season tickets are on sale now. Adult season tickets begin at $50 and youth/senior season tickets start at $25. For men's basketball, options are available for traditional season tickets or our innovative "FLEX" pass option. This unique ticketing opportunity includes a 17, 8 or 5-game package for purchasers to choose from. Click here to learn more!
Cameron Young Makes it Back-to-Back Deacon PGA Rookies of the Year
Wake Forest men's golf alum Cameron Young was voted as the Arnold Palmer Award winner for the 2021-22 season, given to the PGA TOUR Rookie of the Year! This marks the second-consecutive season that a Demon Deacon has claimed the award as Will Zalatoris took home the prize a season ago. This is the first time in the history of the award that members from the same school have won in back-to-back seasons and fittingly, the award is named after Wake Forest legend, Arnold Palmer!
Successful Undergraduate Research Day Highlighted Family Weekend
Beyond the exciting and dominant win over Army inside Truist Field when over 80,000 people packed our beautiful football stadium and the Carolina Classic Fair next door, Wake Forest hosted 2022 Undergraduate Research Day as more than 150 students presented their original scholarship in collaboration with faculty mentors. Click here to see photos of the event.
More Wake Forest Alums Making National Headlines for Leadership and Innovation
Syd Kitson, a 1970's Wake Forest football alum, was featured on CBS' 60 Minutes a few weeks ago as his latest development, Babcock Ranch, is a completely sustainable, environmentally-friendly 'town of the future' roughly 25 miles northeast of Fort Myers, Florida that includes schools, grocery stores and shopping outlets and a vibrant community.
Babcock Ranch was in the eye of Hurricane Ian a few weeks ago, but was able to withstand the storm with no damage or loss of power! Syd's example of Pro Humanitate expands well-beyond what is featured in the 60 Minutes piece.
Also, Sam Chason ('20), CEO of Storage Scholars, and his partner and COO Matt Gronberg ('21) appeared on the Emmy award-winning show Shark Tank to pitch their innovative and forward-thinking start up company. Storage Scholars is another great success story of the innovative WinstonStarts business incubator. Senior Associate AD Arin Dunn and I had a fascinating visit and tour with Winston Starts President Stan Parker and board members Todd Johnson and Steve Lineberger yesterday in the spectacular 500 West 5th building downtown.
Trailblazers Jim Caldwell & Charlene Curtis Honored as ACC UNITE Award Recipients
As a charter member of the ACC, Wake Forest University is proud to participate in this effort to annually honor trailblazers at each institution. Former Deacon head coaches Jim Caldwell and Charlene Curtis were true pioneers in the Atlantic Coast Conference. While at Wake Forest their class resonated throughout the student-athletes and programs they led. They were transformational leaders who set strong role model examples for the young men and women they led and mentored during their time in Winston-Salem and throughout their careers.
Olympic Sports Roundup: Big Wins & Exciting Crowds Highlight Fall Success
Our programs competing this fall continue to make headlines with exciting wins and memorable moments! At home in the Wake Forest Tennis Complex for the Carolina Regionals, women's tennis' Maddie Lynch captured a singles title and Anya Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth won the doubles, securing spots at the ITA Fall Nationals in San Diego next month.
At Spry Stadium, our No. 25-ranked men's soccer team beat Boston College 3-1 during their Genna Wiley Memorial Match as Coach Bobby Muuss secured his 200th win at Wake Forest last weekend and the Deacs added a mid-week win over Wofford on Tuesday. Also, thank you to all who bid on this year's pink jerseys and helped us raise over $5,000 to benefit the Breast Care Center Patient Support Fund at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist.
Additionally at Spry Stadium, Sunday marks our final regular season home match for our women's soccer team as they host Notre Dame at 5 p.m. Tickets start at just $10 as our Demon Deacons battle for an ACC and NCAA Tournament berth! Meanwhile, Coach Jen Averill's No. 13-ranked field hockey program is on the road with a match this afternoon at Boston College and a Sunday tilt at Brown.
Our nationally-ranked men's cross country team won the Panorama Farms 2022 cross country invitational to conclude their 2022 regular season in Charlottesville, Va. last weekend and are just a week away from the conference championship meet!
Tune into ACC Network Extra at 7 p.m. tonight as Coach Randi Smart and our 12-7 volleyball program continues its road swing this weekend in the sunshine state at Miami.
Walker Named Interim Dean as Walton Heads to Princeton
Last week Dr. Corey D. B. Walker was named interim Dean of the Wake Forest University School of Divinity. I have really enjoyed getting to know Dr. Walker who will continue to serve as Wake Forest Professor of the Humanities and director of Wake Forest's African American Studies Program. As you may have read, Dean Jonathan Lee Walton has been named as the president of Princeton Theological Seminary. Jonathan has become a close personal friend and trusted colleague over the last three years and while we will deeply miss having him and Cecily right down the street, we are incredibly proud of him being selected to lead his alma mater.
