DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Wake Forest field hockey team got back in the win column with an impressive 2-0 victory over Davidson at Belk Turf Field on Sunday.
Sophomore goalie Ellie Todd and the Wake (4-5, 0-2 ACC) defense pitched their fourth shutout of the season while Todd notched a new season-high turning away eight Wildcat (4-8, 0-3 A10) shots on the afternoon.
Wake Forest broke through off the stick of Brooke McCusker in the second period. McCusker took the corner at the top of the circle, dribbled to her right and fired a laser into the back of the net to put the Deacs on top. The Demon Deacons extended their lead in the third quarter as Nat Friedman also scored for the first time this season. Faye Janse found Friedman who fired from near the top left of the circle into the net. For Friedman, it marked her eight career goals and pushed her to 31 career points.
Offensively, the Deacs finished with 14 shots, with six on frame in the match. McCusker and Janse led the way with three shots apiece.
How It Happened
Quotables
"Disappointed with the amount of defensive corners that we're giving up. We're kind of playing with fire there. We're going to make some alterations and adjust that. Secondly, it was really nice to see how we were solving some problems through that first quarter. In the second quarter, we got some flow going. I think it's a sigh of relief for the squad. We're going to continue to work on our structure and how we can possess the ball better to get ourselves more opportunity for sustained attacks." - head coach Jen Averill
