Deacs Fall in Shootout Heartbreaker at No. 5 Louisville

10/6/2023 9:00:00 PM | Field Hockey

LOUISVILLE, Ky - The Wake Forest field hockey team left it all on the turf Friday night at Trager Stadium, battling to a 0-0 result in regulation and two overtime periods, before ultimately falling 4-1 in a penalty shootout.

The Wake defense was stout all evening, facing 11 shots and nine Louisville corners that were all kept out of the cage. Sophomore Ellie Todd finished the match with five saves.

Senior Meredith Medvetz was the lone Demon Deacon to convert her penalty in the shootout period while Amelia Frey took both of the Deacs shots in regulation as Louisville held Wake without a corner for the entirety of the match.

How It Happened
  • The Deacs gave up two corners in the first minute of action with Todd turning away the first Cardinal shot of the match just 27 seconds into the match.
  • Frey ripped the Deacs first shot of the match firing from the top-right of the circle sailing just to the left of the cage.
    • Frey would take both of Wake's first half shots with both going wide of the cage. The pair of shots ended up being the only two for the Demon Deacons.
  • Todd turned away three shots from Louisville in the opening 30 minutes with all three coming off of Cardinal corners.
  • The Wake corner defense held strong, turning away the seventh of the match with seven minutes left in the third quarter.
  • Neither team put a shot on frame with Louisville outshooting the Deacs 2-0 in the third.
  • The defensive battle continued as Wake held the Cardinal to just one shot in the fourth quarter to head into overtime at 0-0.
  • Todd kept the match alive with a foot save midway through the first OT period extending her left foot to keep the ball out of the cage.
  • Despite Faye Janse picking up a yellow card with three minutes remaining in the first OT period, the Demon Deacons defense held strong to force the second OT period.
  • Both backlines held to force the match into a penalty shootout.
  • Louisville took the match, winning 4-1 in the shootout.

Quotables
"Incredibly proud of our effort and our execution. Offensively and defensively, as it relates to our outlet, we did a much better job this evening with patience in and building the ball out of the back. We certainly had a more sustainable press which was really significant this evening. It's a hard loss, but one I think the team and staff is proud of because of the heart and fight we showed." - head coach Jen Averill
