No. 25 Wake Forest Men’s Golf Team Prepares for the Ben Hogan Invitational This Week

The No. 25 Demon Deacons are heading to Shady Oaks Country Club to Compete in the Ben Hogan Invitational

WESTWORTH VILLAGE, TEXAS- The nationally-ranked Wake Forest men's golf team prepares for Shady Oaks Country Club this week. The Demon Deacons are fresh off a team win at the Highlands Invitational. 

Not only did the Deacs win the team title but senior Michael Brennan also took home the individual title at Chicago Highlands. Brennan claimed his seventh individual title of his collegiate career

The senior has the fourth most individual titles in Wake Forest history. The Virginia native is ranked among Demon Deacon legends on this short list.

The Deacs also had three other players finish in the top-10 at the Highlands Invitational. Collin Adams had a breakout performance last week shooting a 67 (-5) and finished tied for 10th. 

Junior Marshall Meisel also tied for tenth tallying 13 birdies and one eagle over the course of the tournament. Finally, 

Scotty Kennon put up another strong performance in Chicago. The junior finished seventh with an impressive four straight birdies on the front nine during round one.

Sophomore Andrew McLauchlan made his first top-25 finish of the season during the Highlands Invitational. McLauchlan is looking to keep his momentum going after his success in Chicago.

This will be the third-straight season the Deacs have competed in the Ben Hogan Invitational. The tournament will be held from Monday, Oct. 2 to Tuesday Oct. 3. GolfDigest ranks Shady Oaks as the best course in the state of Texas and is a top 20 course in the country.

In 2021, Brennan shot 11 under-par to take home the fourth title of his career. With momentum from Chicago, the senior looks to tie Curtis Strange as he prepares for the Ben Hogan.

The Ben Hogan Invitational hosts a field of 15 teams. Out of those 15 teams 14 are ranked in the Bushnell/Golfweek top-25. Florida State, Georgia Tech and North Carolina are the conference foes competing at the Ben Hogan.

Shady Oaks Country Club was the home course of Ben Hogan. Hogan, along with the founder of Shady Oaks, Marvin Leonard, designed the course to be one of the top tracks in Texas. 

Wake Forest will be teeing off round one at 9:00 a.m. ET Monday morning and will continue on to round two immediately after round one. The Deacs are set to tee off with no. 15 Pepperdine and no. 10 Oklahoma.

THE DEACS' LINEUP
Michael Brennan
Senior Michael Brennan heads into the Ben Hogan Invitational ranked sixth in the PGA Tour University and 16th in the World Amateur Golf Rankings. At the Highlands Invitational, Brennan claimed his seventh individual title. The Virginia native has the fourth most individual titles in Wake Forest history.  In 2021 Brennan took home his fourth individual title at the Ben Hogan Invitational shooting eleven under-par over the course of the tournament. The senior had a lot of success at Pinehurst No. 2 last season. During the Wake Forest Invitational, Brennan turned in his lowest score of the season shooting a 64 (-6). In April Brennan made his return to Pinehurst as he took home the 2023 ACC Individual Title and helped push the Deacs to the final round of the ACC Championship. Heading into his senior season Brennan made his second professional appearance in the U.S. Open at the Los Angeles Country Club.

Scotty Kennon
Junior Scotty Kennon was one of four Demon Deacons to finish in the top-10 at the Highlands Invitational. During round one of the Highlands Invitational, Kennon tallied four straight birdies from holes no. four through seven. The junior also had the third most birdies tallied at Chicago Highlands. Last year Kennon came into his own as he ended his season with six top-25 finishes. One of which was his first top-five finish during the final event of the season. The Florida native helped the Deacs take home wins at the Battle of Brian's Creek and the Battle of the Run. During the past two ACC Championships Kennon has played a big role for the Demon Deacons. This past season Kennon claimed one of the points to help take the Deacs to their second straight ACC Championship appearance. Kennon ended strong winning 5&4 with big wins on the ninth, 10th, and 12th holes.

Marshall Meisel
Junior Marshall Meisel had posted a strong performance at the Highlands Invitational. The Maryland native put together his first top-10 finish of the season. The Junior finished in top-five for most birdies and tallied one eagle at Chicago Highlands. Last season, Meisel finished in the top-25 at three different events. Along with that, he added a pair of top-10 finishes at the Battle of the Run and the Old Town Club College Invitational. 

Andrew McLauchlan
At Chicago Highlands, McLauclan helped out the Deacs with his first top-25 finish of the season. The sophomore started on the right foot at the Highlands Invitational notching an eagle early in round one. Early in his freshman season, McLauchlan solidified himself on the starting lineup for the Deacs. In his first round of the 2022-23 season, McLauchlan turned in his lowest score of the season, shooting 64. The Florida native finished in the top-10 in four tournaments last season. During the final event of the season, McLauchlan tied for first at the Battle of the Run. At the ACC Championship Semifinals, McLauchlan held a strong 3UP lead while Mark Power scored the deciding point to send the Deacs to the final. 

Collin Adams
The junior from Charlotte made his season debut at the Highlands Invitational. Adams went on a tear during the second round of the Highlands Invitational. During round two, the Charlotte native notched six birdies en route to shooting five under-par. Last season Adams competed in five events. Adams secured two top-20 finishes and shot a career-low 66 (-6).

Shady Oaks Country Club - Westworth Village, Texas - 70 par - 6,885 yards
  • In 1955, Marvin Leonard bought 1,220 acres in 1955 and started to build his new club in Fort Worth.
  • With the help of Ben Hogan, Robert Trent Jones and Hedrick & Stanley, Leonard built one of the greatest courses in the Lone Star State.
  • Leonard was also the mind behind Colonial Golf Club which has hosted many collegiate tournaments that the Demon Deacons have competed in.
