No. 14 Deacs Power Past No. 20 Coastal Carolina, 12-3

4/9/2024 11:10:00 PM | Baseball

The nationally-ranked Wake Forest picked up its fourth consecutive top-20 victory Tuesday night behind a season-high six big flies including multi-home run nights from junior Nick Kurtz and sophomore Jack Winnay.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind an explosive performance at the plate that included season-high six Demon Deacon home runs and multi-home run nights from junior Nick Kurtz and sophomore Jack Winnay, the No. 14 Wake Forest baseball team continued its winning ways with its fifth-straight win and fourth consecutive against a top-20 team, defeating No. 20 Coastal Carolina, 12-3, Tuesday night at David F. Couch Ballpark.

After a three-game road sweep over No. 11 Virginia Tech over the weekend, the Deacs bats continued to stay red hot. Wake Forest jumped out to a commanding lead with five runs in the bottom of the first inning which all came via the big fly. Kurtz, who was named the D1 National Player of the Week, Dick Howser Player of the Week and ACC Player of the Week for his performances against the Hokies and UNC Greensboro, got the Deacs on the board first with the first of his two home runs of the game.

Winnay, who also had a two-home run night, followed up Kurtz with back-to-back home runs. Two batters later junior Seaver King joined the party with the third long ball of the game.

After going yard in his first two at-bats, Kurtz had six home runs in his last seven at bats. Additionally, it made it an even 10 home runs in the last six games for the Lancaster, Pa. native. Over the last two games, Kurtz is 6-of-8 (.750) with five home runs, 12 RBI and six runs scored.

Over the last seven games, Kurtz has raised his batting average .101 points. For the season, he is now hitting .318 at the plate with 13 home runs and 31 RBI while also holding a .512 on-base percentage. The top six batters in the Wake Forest order are now all hitting .304 or better this season.

Winnay is tied with Kurtz for the team lead with 13 home runs and Wake Forest as a team have now left the ballpark on 62 occasions including 23 home runs as a team in the last six games.

King tied Kurtz for the team high three hits while also tallying four RBI. Over the last three games, the Athens, Ga. native has 10 RBI with three or more in every contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Coastal took an early lead with a run in the top of the first.
  • Wake Forest immediately answered with an onslaught of three homers to grab a 5-1 lead after one complete innings.
    • Continuing a ridiculous streak of a homer in six-straight games, first baseman Nick Kurtz put the Deacs on top with a two-run shot to deep right.
    • Three pitches later, right fielder Jack Winnay exited stage left to immediately match Kurtz for the team lead with 12 homers.
    • After a four pitch walk to senior Jake Reinisch, third baseman Seaver King joined the fun, depositing a 1-0 pitch to right center to stretch the lead to four.
  • With a pair of runners on in the bottom of the second, Kurtz homered for the sixth time in seven at-bats, taking a 2-2 pitch off the scoreboard in right center to make it 8-2.
  • Freshmen Haiden Leffew and Blake Morningstar responded with a shutdown frame each to keep the Chanticleers at bay in the third and fourth
  • Working around a pair of Coastal runners in scoring position, lefty Crawford Wade threw Wake's third-straight zero on the board in his second appearance since returning from injury.
  • Going back-to-back for the second time, Wake Forest extended their lead to 10-2 on Winnay's second homer of the night and Reinisch's eighth of the year.
  • Wade picked up the first two outs of the sixth before giving way to Will Ray, who needed just two pitches to end the top of the sixth.
  • Entering with the bases loaded and one away in the seventh, graduate transfer David Falco escaped a bases loaded jam with a strikeout and lineout.
  • After a single by Kurtz and a walk from Reinisch, King hit a two-RBI single to extend the Deacs lead to 12-3.
  • In the top of the ninth, right hander Cole Roland entered the game and fanned two batters to seal the victory.
  • The Demon Deacons defeated the Chanticleers, 12-3.

FROM COACH WALTER
"That was a great team win against a really good ball club. First and foremost, congratulations to Coach Gilmore on his last game at David F. Couch Ballpark. He's the best and a true pro. His players love him and he has great teams year in and year out. His players win, play the game the right way and I can't say enough good things about Coach Gilmore and everything he brought to Coastal Carolina University and all of college baseball. I hate that it is his last time at The Couch. He and I are going to spend some time together this summer and go fishing.

The bullpen was great again today. I was very happy with David Falco coming in and bridging. Haiden Leffew came in and got a big out in a bridge situation as well as Andrew Koshy. Seaver King, Nick Kurtz and Jack Winnay were the story offensively. They did just enough to win. We didn't do a great job with runners in scoring position tonight. We hit some balls out of the ballpark and kept Coastal inside the ballpark which we didn't do at their place. That was a great team win and hopefully we can keep the momentum rolling into a big series against Boston College."  - head coach Tom Walter
