Good Afternoon Demon Deacon Nation,
It's GAMEDAY in DEACTOWN Charlotte where the Diamond Deacons are set to take on the Tar Heels tonight at 7 p.m. inside Truist Field, live on ACC Network. Toeing the rubber for the Deacs will be 2024 ACC Pitcher of the Year Chase Burns in the 299th edition of a historic rivalry, which began way back in 1891! Wake Forest won that inaugural contest 133 years ago 10-7, and I know Deacon Nation will be out in full force as we look to advance to Saturday's 1:00 p.m. ACC Tournament semifinals game!
Elsewhere within Wake Forest Athletics, our men's tennis reached the Final Four for just the third time in program history last weekend and our singles and doubles players made waves at the NCAA Championships. Additionally, Coach Kim Lewellen and our women's golf team turned in another national top-10 finish, while a baker's dozen of track & field student-athletes are competing in NCAA East Regional action in Kentucky and men's golf begins play today at the NCAA Championships in California.
And most importantly we are incredibly proud of our graduating class featuring 113 Demon Deacons including 28 student-athletes who earned their degrees in December. This esteemed group of young men and women has collectively won nearly 800 contests (so far!) during their respective careers, bringing home seven ACC Championships, four ACC Individual Championships and one NCAA Championship. Additionally, this group earned 134 All-ACC Academic selections and seven Postgraduate Scholarships!
Amidst the competitive excitement, this is also a historic moment in time as the Atlantic Coast Conference Board of Directors met earlier this week and voted to join with the Autonomy 5 conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, SEC and Pac-12) and NCAA in collectively settling three antitrust cases (House, Hubbard, Carter) in which we are joint defendants.
The primary benefit of the settlement is that it reduces the significant financial liability Autonomy Five conferences face with these antitrust lawsuits. However, there are significant issues for which the settlement does not provide solutions or guidance, including financial pressures, gender equity, and governance challenges going forward. While there are new permissive opportunities to further enhance our World Class Student-Athlete Experience, our commitment to fiscal responsibility means that we will have to carefully consider our allocation of existing resources as we continue to provide broad-based championship opportunities for young women and men at Wake Forest.
I am grateful for President Susan R. Wente's ongoing engaged leadership for Wake Forest University and the Atlantic Coast Conference. Thanks to the commitment of the Wake Forest Board of Trustees and University leadership and the support of 2.7 million Demon Deacon fans nationwide, we enter this new era of intercollegiate athletics stronger and with more momentum than ever before!
I encourage you to read President Wente and my press statement from earlier today. Additionally, here is the joint statement from the Autonomy Five conferences and NCAA.
In recent years, we've won our 10th NCAA national championship, 57th ACC team crown and 200th ACC individual title, competed in seven straight football bowl games, while setting attendance and fundraising records and, most importantly, continuing our heritage of elite graduation rates and classroom success including men's basketball's recent seven honorees on the Academic All-ACC team. Together with all of Deacon Nation we are committed to success at the highest level of intercollegiate athletics.
And speaking of that…
Here are today's From the Quad Big 3 ways to help the Deacs!
I'll look forward to seeing many of you in Charlotte tonight at Truist Field and please continue to send your thoughts, ideas and suggestions to me at wfuad@wfu.edu.
