The Demon Deacons are 6-0 against ranked opponents since the start of September.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Behind the second-straight game with three or more goals from junior Mia Schoenbeck, the No. 6 Wake Forest field hockey team took down No. 8 Duke, 3-1, for their 14th-straight victory on Friday evening at Williams Field at Jack Katz Stadium.
Wake Forest also picks up a share of the ACC regular-season title for the first time since 2006, and will look for its first outright title since 2005 against Virginia next Friday.
The Demon Deacons (14-2, 7-0 ACC) extended their longest winning streak since 2005, a season in which Wake Forest started 19-0 and advanced to the NCAA Semifinals.
Schoenbeck moved into fifth in program history in single-season goals with her hat trick tonight. She leads the ACC with 21 goals through 16 matches this season and ranks second in the nation.
With four goals against Cal on Sunday and three against the Blue Devils tonight, the LaGrange, Ky., native has added seven goals in the last two matches. Schoenbeck has scored in 10 of the 14 games over the win streak, including 11 goals in the last five matches. She leads the ACC with seven game-winning goals.
Schoenbeck's penalty corner goal in the first quarter, assisted by sophomore Mia Montag and senior Rachel Thetford, extended Wake Forest's streak of scoring off corners to 14 consecutive matches. Schoenbeck added another corner goal in the fourth quarter, with the unit now accounting for 26 of the Deacs' 60 total goals this fall.
Wake Forest's 60 goals mark the first time since 2018 the Demon Deacons have reached that total.
How It Happened
"Coming into this game, we knew that Duke was going to try and play through the lines and play direct hockey. I'm just so incredibly proud of our poise and our patience. We played four complete quarters tonight, and we had to. When opportunity was given, we took advantage of it. I thought that every line of our press was more functional tonight. Our midfield took care of business, and our backfield improved on their marking ability. It was just one of the best wins of the season thus far against a very, very talented team." – Head Coach Jen Averill
