Wake Forest Turns Attention to NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships

Five Demon Deacons are headed to Virginia Beach, Va., to compete from March 14 to 15.
WINSTON-SALEM N.C. - Heading into their final days of the 2024-25 indoor campaign, five Demon Deacons are set to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach, Va. The competition will be held from March 14 to 15 at Virginia Beach Sports Center.

Competing for the Deacs John Hayes' Era of Impact
Making his seventh appearance at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, Wake Forest Director of Track & Field and Cross Country John Hayes will lead five Demon Deacons onto the national stage from March 14-15.
In his eighth season as director, Hayes led the Wake Forest Cross Country team to its first ACC Championship title since 1994—and second in the past three years. Hayes and the Deacs secured Wake Forest Athletics' sixth title and 58th overall ACC Championship on Nov. 1, 2024.
He then guided the program to a seventh-place finish at the 2024 NCAA Championships on Nov. 23 in Madison, Wis., where he coached All-American Charlie Sprott to a 32nd-place finish with a time of 29:21.6.
Following these accomplishments, Hayes was honored with the 2024 Southeast Regional and ACC Cross Country Coach of the Year awards.
At the 2025 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, Hayes led the No. 4-ranked distance medley relay team to a third-place finish with a time of 9:32.19.
In addition, he coached graduate student Robbie Grace to second place in the women's long jump, while senior Luke Tewalt took second in the men's 3000-meters. Four athletes, including the DMR team, earned All-ACC honors.

Indoor All-American
Rocky Hansen is ready to electrify the track as he takes on the men's 5000-meter race at the 2025 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, on Friday evening.
Hansen's 2025 indoor season began at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blacksburg, Va., where he stormed to victory in the mile, clocking 3:57.90.
Building on that momentum, Hansen shattered the Wake Forest Indoor All-Time Record with a stunning personal-best time of 13:14.43 in his first-ever indoor 5000m at the BU Terrier Classic on Feb. 1 in Boston.
The performance catapulted him to the top of the ACC standings and earned him the No. 9 spot in the NCAA for the event.
Heading into Friday night's event, the Demon Deacons are ranked No. 6 in the 5000m.
No. 4 DMR Squad Braces for Virginia Beach Clash
Following the 5000m, the No. 4 NCAA-ranked distance medley relay squad— Luke Tewalt, Rynard Swanepoel, Paul Specht, and Foster Shelbert—are set to toe the line in Virginia Beach.
On Feb. 21, Wake Forest smashed its indoor record with a 9:17.17 time at the Terrier DMR/Last Chance Meet, propelling the team to No. 4 all-time in the NCAA.
At the 2025 ACC Indoor Championships, Shelbert, Swanepoel, Tewalt, and Specht posted a 9:32.19 to take third place.
3000-meter Race Follows Record-Breaking Performance
After a record-setting performance at the ACC Indoor Championships in Louisville, Ky., Tewalt is primed for the 3000m race on Saturday.
Tewalt captured second place on March 3 with a blazing 7:39.09, earning first-team All-ACC honors and climbing into the national top 10.
This marks his second record-breaking effort of the season, having previously set the program's indoor all-time record at 7:39.77 during the
David Hemery Valentine Invitational on Feb. 14.
Tewalt ranks No. 9 nationally for the 3000m, while the Deacs are ranked No. 12 in the event.

On March 21, Wake Forest will compete in their first outdoor meet of the 2025 season at the Webb Davidson Invitational in High Point, N.C.

- First Team All-America honors are given to the top 8 finishers in each event at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Championships. All finalists in an eight-person final earn First Team status, regardless of placement.
- Second Team All-America status is awarded to finishers 9-16. Semifinal placements are used for events with fewer than 16 finalists. Athletes must have a valid mark in at least one round to earn All-America status. Those with no height, disqualified, or who foul three attempts are ineligible unless they have a valid mark from a previous round.
- Remaining participants are given honorable mention but are not considered All-Americans.
