Following a memorable race at the Raleigh Relays, which stunned Deacon Nation and shattered the outdoor program record in her 10,000m debut, sophomore Brooke Wilson prepares to race in the 5000m as Friday evening approaches. Heading into the event, she holds a personal best of 15:51.57.
Deacs Lead the Field
Along with Wilson, Duke University will host several Demon Deacons, beginning with seniors Jacob Goldberg, Isabella Gera, and freshman Kristyna Peterova will kick off the Deacs' competing in hammer throw Thursday morning.
In her last outing, at the VertKlasse meet, Gera shone, capturing third place in women's shot put with a throw of 14.13 meters. The Greensburg, Pa.-native came close to breaking into the top 10 in the discus as well with a toss of 42.78m. This followed a solid sixth-place finish in hammer throw (51.38m).
Peterova also returns after competing this past weekend at High Point University, posting 51.38 meters to finish sixth.
On the Hunt
Freshman Samantha Heyison, recently named to the USA National Team for the third consecutive year, returns to the field Friday to compete in shot put and discus. In her last outing at the VertKlasse meet, Heyison performed strongly, recording throws of 39.79m in the discus and 11.89m in the shot put.
Aria Wegh is also poised to build on her impressive freshman outdoor campaign, having already set three personal bests to open the 2025 season.
At the Webb Davidson Meet, Wegh placed fourth in the 400m with a career-best time of 56.46 seconds. She also set a personal best in the 200m, finishing in 25.14 seconds, and at the Raleigh Relays, she excelled in the 400m hurdles, posting a new best of 59.68 seconds.
On the track, junior Paul Specht and freshman JoJo Jourdon are set to make their 2025 season debuts in the 1500m. Both athletes advanced to the mile finals at the 2025 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships, with Specht finishing fourth in 4:02.84 and earning second-team All-ACC honors, while Jourdon crossed the line in 4:06.08.
Specht later led the Demon Deacons to a thrilling finish in the distance medley relay, where the team earned second-team All-American honors at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 14 in Louisville, Ky.
Alongside Specht and Jourdon, senior Rynard Swanepoel will return to the Duke Invitational, where he is set to race in the 1500m. Swanepoel competed at the same meet in 2024, setting a personal best of 3:41.70, and currently ranks seventh on the Wake Forest all-time outdoor list.
Graduate Rylan Engels is also aiming to surpass her personal best of 4:20.30 as she takes on the women's 1500m for the second time this season.
Finally, senior star Emma Douglass will return to the track on Friday for the 400m and Saturday for the 800m, eyeing the program record of 2:04.46, set by Nikeya Green in 2003. Douglass placed fourth at the Raleigh Relays, finishing in 2:04.81, and currently ranks second on the all-time list.
