SYRACUSE, N.Y. - No. 21 Wake Forest begins postseason play on Thursday, Nov. 4 at 6:00 p.m. against No. 10 North Carolina in the opening round of the 2021 Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament inside J.S. Coyne Stadium in Syracuse, N.Y. 

The matchup will be carried by the ACC Network.

ACC CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY
Wake Forest has won four Atlantic Coast Conference Championships (2002, 2003, 2006, 2014).

Since 2000, the Demon Deacons have been victorious on 15 occasions in their first match of the conference tournament.

OPPONENT & SERIES HISTORY
The Demon Deacons and Tar Heels have matched up 82 times prior to Thursday's first round contest, with Wake Forest trailing the all-time series 21-58-3. Additionally, this marks the fifth matchup in the last two years between the two teams. 

The Deacs and Tar Heels have hit the turf against each other every season since 1992. 

LAST TIME OUT
The Wake Forest field hockey team fell 2-1 against Boston College in their regular season finale on Friday, Oct. 29 at Kentner Stadium. 

After a scoreless first half, Wake Forest cut Boston College lead to 2-1 in the fourth period as Meike Lanckohr fired a shot into the back of the net at the 47-minute mark. The fourth-period score from Lanckohr marked her ninth goal of her junior campaign, adding to her team-best tally.

Tori Glaister secured four saves for the fifth time this season, increasing her career-best save total to 48 in her 21st-straight start in goal. 

Prior to the match, Wake Forest honored six members of this year's senior class: Abby Carpenter, Olivia Corthals, Elisha Evans, Grace Sambrook, Laia Vancells and Eleanor Winants, and their team manager, Sam Roadie, for their contributions to the Demon Deacons field hockey program.

LANCKOHR & FRIEDMAN GARNER ACC HONORS 
Junior midfielders Meike Lanckohr and Nat Friedman were named to the 2021 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Field Hockey team, as announced by the league Wednesday afternoon.

Lanckohr, who was selected to the All-ACC first team, and Friedman, who landed on the second team, received their All-Conference accolades for the second-straight season after anchoring Wake Forest's offense throughout the entire 2021 regular season. 

Lanckohr has led Wake Forest's offense with a team-high and career-best nine goals, which is tied for second in the ACC. In 2021, Lanckohr has found the back of the net in seven of her 12 appearances. 

After scoring a trio of goals in wins over Duke and UMass, Lanckohr was named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time of her career.

In addition to her First Team All-ACC distinction last season, Lanckohr was named a NFHCA All-American and a First Team NFHCA All-Region selection. 

Friedman has dished out a career-high and team-best eight assists in 2021, which is tied for the ACC lead. During the regular season, Friedman assisted on a Wake Forest goal in seven matches, highlighted by a career-best two assists against App State on Sept. 4. In addition to setting up her teammates, Friedman notched goals against James Madison (Sept. 12) and VCU (Oct. 22). 

On Oct. 20, Friedman was named to Team USA's Junior World Cup team that will head to Potchefstroom, South Africa on Dec. 5-16.

HATTY FOR HANNAH
Hannah Maxwell has netted a career-high seven goals this season, highlighted by hat tricks in wins over App State (Sept. 4) and Davidson (Oct. 17). Her 16 points (seven goals and two assists) rank second on the squad. Additionally, her seven goals are tied for fifth in the ACC.

 

GLAISTER A MAINSTAY IN GOAL
Tori Glaister earned her sixth win of the season against Davidson on Oct. 17. In Wake Forest's last match against UNC on Oct. 15.  Glaister was credited with a career-high eight saves. This season, Glaister has made 48 saves (fifth in ACC), a new career high. Additionally, she has made at least four saves on six separate occasions and has tallied at least two stops in 19 of her last 22 starts.

The Demon Deacon defense was solid the entire 2021 season as Wake Forest allowed two goals or less in 13 of their first 16 regular season matches.

REGULAR SEASON RECAP

  • Wake Forest opened the 201 regular season with their biggest challenge yet, facing No. 1 Iowa and No. 2 Michigan in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge on Aug. 27 and 29. 

  • The Demon Deacons posted their first victory of the 2021 season with a 5-1 win over App State in their home opener at Kentner Stadium on Sept. 4. Hannah Maxwell led Wake Forest with a career-high three goals to post the program's 29th-straight win over the Mountaineers. 

  • After losing a non-conference contest against Ohio State, the Deacs registered three-straight games in a seven-day span against James Madison (Sept. 12), Duke (Sept. 17) and UMass (Sept. 19). 

    • Wake Forest defeated James Madison as six different Demon Deacons found the back of the net, highlighted by the first goals of the season from Ashley Arnold, Olivia Corthals, Maggie Dickman, Nat Friedman and Ashley Hart.

    • A 3-1 victory on Sept. 17 over Duke marked Wake Forest's first conference win of the season as Meike Lanckohr netted a pair of goals in the first half. 

    • Days later, the team collected their second ranked victory of the weekend, taking down No. 21 UMass 3-2 at Kentner Stadium. The Deacs jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to an aggressive offensive attack, outshooting UMass 27-10 in the match and recording 13 corner opportunities to UMass' four. 

  • Wake Forest's win streak was snapped against No. 11 Virginia as the Cavaliers posted a 3-1 victory on Sept. 24. The Deacs went out on the road the following Friday as the squad fell just short (2-1) at No. 3 Louisville in double overtime. 

  • The Deacs got back on track with a 2-1 win at Miami (OH) after goals by Maggie Dickman and Meike Lanckohr. Glaister earned her fifth win of the season as the London, England native made her 15th-straight start at goalie. Glaister was credited with a trio of saves, including a pair in the opening 10 minutes of game action.

  • The Demon Deacons dropped their last two matches by just one goal against ACC foes Syracuse and North Carolina.

    • Against the Orange, Syracuse netted a penalty stroke last in regulation to take a one-goal lead. 

    • Glaister was credited with a career-high eight saves in the match against North Carolina on Oct. 15 inside Kentner Stadium.

  • Wake Forest earned a 5-0 shutout victory on the road at Davidson, highlighted by Hannah Maxwell's second hat trick of the season. 

  • The Deacs split their final road trip of the regular season against VCU and Richmond. In their road finale against the Spiders, the offense started out fast thanks to first half goals from Eleanor Winants and Maggie Dickman. Dickman and McCusker netted the final two goals of the match to secure the 4-1 win. 

  • A season finale and Senior Day match against Boston College marked the end of the 2021 regular season campaign.
