Good Morning Demon Deacon Nation!
It has been a busy week for all of us at Wake Forest as women's basketball's 10th win Wednesday marked our fourth game inside Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum in five days!
Whether it was Tuesday's men's big comeback win, ACC Player of the Week Alondes Williams' triple-double or Jewel Spear's 40-point performance at the Deacs annual School Day game, there is much to be excited about with our basketball programs. Our hoops teams are a combined 20-2 thus far this season as each program is off to its best start since the 2008-09 campaign!
Did you know Wake Forest is the only Division I school in the country thus far this year to reach 10 wins in football, men's basketball and women's basketball!
Both teams dive back into ACC play at home next week with Coach Forbes' squad hosting Boston College at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 22 and Coach Hoover's team playing Florida State in the Joel 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30.
But, tonight our men are in the Queen City at the Spectrum Center as Wake Forest takes on the Charlotte 49ers in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Shootout. Tipoff is set for 9 p.m. and tickets can be purchased here, with the live broadcast set for 9 p.m. on the ACC Network. Wake Forest is proud to participate in this event with the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in the year of Tim Duncan's induction to the Hall of Fame.
After the incredible fan support we all witnessed at the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 4 and with Wake Forest being the only ACC school with a Charlotte campus, I look forward to seeing Deacon Nation out in full force again tonight!
Meanwhile, Deacon fans in the Atlanta area should head to Georgia Tech's McCamish Pavilion for Sunday night's 6 p.m. women's hoops conference opener against the 8-2 Yellow Jackets. Fans can also watch live on the ACC Network.
Before I jump into the rest of the updates, I want to wish everyone in our Wake Forest and Winston-Salem community Happy Holidays! I hope that each of you have the opportunity over the next few weeks to relax and spend some time with your family and friends. For our Demon Deacon student-athletes, this is a well-deserved break after a great academic semester and solid fall season of competition.
Wake Forest Athletics Goal No. 4 - Win Championships
Speaking of that great semester of fall competition, our Wake Forest teams registered a combined 81-42-1 record this fall, including an astounding 51-16 mark in matches / games played in Winston-Salem!
The Demon Deacons won seven team tournament or individual championships this fall, including our football program for winning the 2021 Atlantic Division title, women's cross country earning the team title at the Chanticleer Challenge and men's cross country winning the NCAA Southeast Regional, men's golf earning the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational crown and women's golf taking home a pair of trophies at the Bryan National Collegiate and Ruth Chris Tar Heel Invitational. Individually, Anna Brylin & Brooke Killingsworth from our Wake Forest women's tennis program won the ITA All-American Doubles National Championship back in October!
Our staff is excited about the opportunity to win a bowl championship on Dec. 31 and many more as a fun and exciting spring semester awaits!
Wake Forest Athletics Goal No. 5 - Best Fan Experience in North Carolina
While the incredible season our student-athletes and coaches had on the gridiron in 2021 was one of the most memorable in program history, those results were witnessed by a record number of fans. Behind our first back-to-back sellouts (Duke on Oct. 30; NC State on Nov. 13) since 2006, Truist Field hosted a 6.4 percent increase in average game attendance this fall compared to the 2019 season. That is the seventh-largest increase rate among Power 5 schools and ranks second in the Atlantic Coast Conference.
This article from Inside Higher Ed captures the radical collaboration of a number of areas of the University community to deliver a greatly improved environment for all Wake Forest students, which provided a true home field advantage for our football student-athletes.
With that, let's continue to raise the standard and continue to create a great home environment for our football team next fall inside Truist Field! Season ticket deposits for the 2022 season are available now for $50. New or existing season ticket holders can visit GoDeacs.com/tickets to make their deposit online or call the Wake Forest Ticket Office at 336-758-3322 ext. 1 during normal business hours. Wake Forest football is 15-2 at home since the start of the 2019 season and this year's perfect 6-0 mark was our first undefeated home record since 1979.
2021 TaxSlayer Gator Bowl - Sunshine State Awaits!
With National Signing Day wrapped up and 12 future Demon Deacons signing their letters of intent, Paul "Bear" Bryant National Coach of the Year award finalist Dave Clawson and our football team are working hard in preparation for the 2021 TaxSlayer Gator Bowl on New Year's Eve. The team and travel party will depart for Jacksonville on Monday, Dec. 27 while the game will kickoff at 11 a.m. on Dec. 31 and be televised nationally on ESPN.
Click here to read about student and fan ticket options for the game. Additionally, the free TaxSlayer Gator Bowl Pep Rally will take place at Jacksonville Beach at Seawalk Pavilion at 4 p.m. on Dec. 30 with the Wake Forest pregame kickoff party later that Thursday night from 5 - 8 p.m. at TIAA Bank Field. Tickets to the party at the Jaguars stadium can be purchased here. Those tickets include food and beverages, two beer/wine tickets, and our signature Gator Bowl swag item. Free convenient parking is adjacent to the stadium for the Wake Forest event.
Meanwhile, Wake Forest students are invited to cap off their TaxSlayer Gator Bowl Eve with an exclusive event hosted at Top Golf Jacksonville. The entire third floor rooftop terrace will be reserved for Wake Forest students with unlimited golf, music, as well as free food and beverages.
We are proud that 21 football student-athletes will head to the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl having already graduated from Wake Forest. Additionally, it will be fun to return to the site of where the Deacs won the 2006 ACC Championship over Georgia Tech, 9-6.
Radical Collaboration & Value to Wake Forest & Winston-Salem
With the goal of increasing our reach locally, nationally and globally of the Demon Deacons brand while providing the highest quality of responsibly-sourced merchandise to Deacon Nation, Wake Forest has entered into a new, long-term partnership with Winston-Salem-based HanesBrands®, Inc. (HBI). When looking to fulfill our goals of providing Value to the University, Winston-Salem and Triad, and the Best Fan Experience in North Carolina, this partnership was a clear focus. The Wake Forest - HanesBrands partnership is important for our University and our entire community as it expands the retail availability of merchandise for students, alumni, fans and anyone living in the Triad!
World Class Honor for Rachel Kuehn!
The Town of Biltmore Forest issued a proclamation this past Tuesday designating Dec. 14, 2021 as "Rachel Kuehn Day" in recognition of her exemplary achievements in the game of golf and excellence in representing the Town of Biltmore Forest, Wake Forest University, the State of North Carolina, and the United States of America!
The two-time WGCA All-American, Rachel has captured three collegiate individual titles and is a two-time Arnold Palmer Cup Team USA selection, 2021 U.S. Amateur medalist, 2020 North & South Champion and 2021 Curtis Cup Team USA selection just to name a few of her countless accolades. The business and enterprise management major is a true scholar-athlete and is poised to have an outstanding spring season as the No. 6 ranked Deacons look to win a conference and NCAA championship!
Welcome to Wake Forest, Dr. Shea Kidd Brown!
We are excited to welcome Wake Forest's new Vice President for Campus Life, Dr. Shea Kidd Brown! Dr. Kidd Brown will officially begin her new position after the new year but she is already working hard to get to know Winston-Salem and Wake Forest. Her energy and vision is contagious and I know she will have a tremendous impact on the experience of all Wake Forest students and our campus community. I commend President Susan R. Wente, Ph.D. on the selection and applaud Provost Rogan Kersh on his efforts leading the search committee.
