No. 11 Wake Forest’s Comeback Bid Falls Short in Season Opener against No. 3 Iowa in ACC-Big Ten Challenge

8/27/2021 7:23:00 PM | Field Hockey

Meike Lanckohr tallied the first multi-goal game of her career, while Brooke McCusker found the back of the net in her first collegiate game.

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The No. 11 Wake Forest field hockey team's comeback bid fell short, dropping its season opener to No. 3 Iowa, 5-3, in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge.

The Demon Deacons (0-1) fought all the way back from three first-period scores from Iowa (1-0), beginning with Brooke McCusker's first collegiate goal in the second frame. In the fourth, Meike Lanckohr tallied back-to-back goals off penalty corners to set a new career high, making it a one-possession game with 10 minutes remaining.

Elisha Evans assisted on the trio of Wake Forest goals, setting a new career best while becoming the first player to do so since Eleanor Winants dished out a hat trick of assists in a 3-0 spring-opening victory against Boston College on March 6.

Additionally, Grace Delmotte produced a pair of assists while Nat Friedman was credited with the first assist of her junior campaign.

Tori Glaister made her sixth-straight start in the goal for the Deacs, tallying a trio of saves in 60 minutes of game action.

How It Happened

  • Iowa struck first, scoring a trio of goals in the first period to take a 3-0 lead following the opening 15 minutes of play.

    • The Hawkeyes found the back of the net twice early, with their first coming at the 5:46 mark. A little over two minutes later, the Hawkeyes increased their lead to 2-0.

    • Iowa capitalized off their first penalty corner of the contest at the 11:50 mark for their third and final goal of the first frame.

    • The Deacs attempted two shots in the quarter as Meike Lanckohr and Grace Sambrook fired one shot apiece. Additionally, Tori Glaister tallied the first save of her sophomore season.

  • Brooke McCusker got Wake Forest on the board with a little over seven minutes into the second quarter with her first collegiate goal. Nat Friedman passed the ball off a penalty corner to Elisha Evans before McCusker fired a shot past the Iowa goalkeeper to cut into the Hawkeyes' lead (3-1).

  • The Deacs trailed 3-1 heading into intermission. McCusker's goal was the only shot between teams throughout the second period.

  • The Hawkeyes threatened early in the third quarter, but Glaister notched her second save of the contest right in front of the goal to keep it a two-score game.

  • The teams shared back and forth action over the next 10 minutes of play, with neither team attempting a shot.

  • In the 40th minute of the game, Iowa increased their advantage to 4-1 after softly flipping the ball over Glaister.

  • Wake Forest's defense responded strongly as Iowa attempted three shots over the final 90 seconds of the period. The final two shots of the stanza were blocked.

  • The Deacs made it a one-possession game (4-3) in the final period thanks to back-to-back goals from Meike Lanckohr in a span of two minutes.

    • Both scores were assisted by Evans, setting a new career-high in assists with three, following penalty corners taken by Grace Delmotte.

    • With just 10 minutes remaining in the game, the Deacs were down just one goal to the top-5 Hawkeyes.

  • With seven and a half minutes remaining, a shot by McCusker was deemed too high and the Hawkeyes received possession of the ball with seven and a half minutes remaining.

  • Iowa responded, increasing their lead to 5-3 following an unassisted goal with just over three minutes remaining.

  • Less than a minute later, Glaister made a great play to force an Iowa shot wide and keep the score at 5-3.

  • Over the next four minutes of game action, the Deacs were unable to find the back of the net as their comeback bid fell short in the season opener.

Quotables

Head Coach Jennifer Averill- "Challenging day for the Deacs. Our first half was not indicative of what we are capable of. Our players fought hard, but we need to limit our errors and play better team hockey."
