No. 16 Demon Deacons Lose to No. 11 Cavaliers, 3-1

Meike Lanckohr netted her team-best seventh goal of the season at Kentner on Friday night.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -  The No. 16 Wake Forest field hockey team fell to No. 11 Virginia in their first home ACC contest of the season by a final score of 3-1 at Kentner Stadium on Friday night.

After a scoreless opening frame from both squads, the Deacs (4-4, 1-1 ACC) took a 1-0 lead over the Cavaliers (6-2, 1-1 ACC) at the 17-minute mark thanks to a goal from Meike Lanckohr. Lanckohr's seventh goal of her junior campaign was set up by assists from Elisha Evans and Grace Delmotte following a penalty corner. For Evans, this marked her fifth assist of the season, tying for a team high.

Virginia responded with a pair of goals in the second period to take a 2-1 advantage into intermission. Seven minutes into the second half, the Cavaliers increased their lead to 3-1 with an unassisted goal, marking the final score of the game.

Overall, Wake Forest outshot Virginia by a tally of 10-9 and doubled their penalty corner opportunities six-to-three. In their six last matches, the Demon Deacons hold a 113-47 shot advantage over their opponents.

Coming into tonight's contest, Lanckohr ranked second in the conference and tied for 15th in the nation in goals scored.

Tori Glaister earned her 13th straight start in net, making one save while only facing five shots.

How It Happened

  • The teams opened the contest with fast-paced play as the Deacs were aggressive on the offensive end. In the first 15 minutes, the Deacs registered a trio of shots on goal and a pair of corner opportunities. Wake Forest's defense held Virginia to just one shot in the first stanza.

  • The Deacs opened the scoring in the second period as Meike Lanckohr netted the game's first goal at the 37-minute mark.

    • Grace Delmotte took Wake Forest's third penalty corner and fired the ball to Elisha Evans, who set up Lanckohr for the strike.

  • Virginia responded with a pair of goals at the 20 and 29-minute mark to overtake the lead. After a scoreless 10 minutes of play, the Cavaliers took their 2-1 advantage into halftime.

    • Through 30 minutes of game action, Wake Forest and Virginia were tied in shot attempts (four), while the Deacs took one more corner than the Cavaliers.

  • Virginia added another goal seven minutes into the third period, increasing their lead to 3-1.

  • The pace of the game slowed down following the fourth goal of the game. However, the Deacs continued to battle, attempting a pair of shots in the final two minutes of regulation. Wake Forest was unable to connect on the opportunities as Virginia secured a 3-1 victory.

Quotables
Head Coach Jennifer Averill - "The difference in this game was the ability to execute when it counted, and we had plenty of opportunities. I wanted so badly for us to pop a couple in early and see if the temperature settled a little bit, but it's hard to be chasing games in the ACC two goals down. That's a big ask against anybody.

"Tonight was a different tone, a different execution by our squad that we had on Sunday, so I'm definitely proud about that growth. Virginia gave us different looks in their outletting. We'll put that in our playbook and learn from it."

Up Next
Wake Forest now begins a three-match road trip as the Deacs first take on Louisville (Friday, Oct. 1). The trip continues with stops at Miami (OH) (Sunday, Oct. 3) and Syracuse (Friday, Oct. 8).
