Good Afternoon Demon Deacon Nation!
The Atlantic Coast Conference football race is ON this weekend in DEACTOWN as we welcome our longtime conference partner Virginia to Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium for a 7 p.m. ESPN2 national broadcast. The inner-traditionalist in me loves the fact that our 2024 football schedule is old school as we play all of the continuing ACC members who go back to our 1953 launch year!
Meanwhile on the 'new-school' side, we've seen unprecedented student engagement in Demon Deacon football, best represented by the awesome 'Deacon Dash' before our Opening Night victory last Thursday! With sophomores, juniors, and seniors already in the stands to cheer on the 1,400 first-year students who sprinted the length of the field ahead of the team, over 4,000 Wake students created a noisy home-field advantage for our Demon Deacons!
We need all of Deacon Nation to bring the energy again Saturday night – and when I checked the sales report earlier this morning we were under 700 tickets remaining – so wrap up that tailgate party a little earlier to get to the gates and in your seats when those national TV cameras come on!
Meanwhile, we have lots more Demon Deacon action starting this afternoon as Coach Tony da Luz and our 3-1-1 women's soccer team is at Villanova for a 4 p.m. start that will be broadcast on FloSports. Additionally, tomorrow afternoon our men's soccer team heads down to Boiling Springs, N.C. for a match at Gardner-Webb. That contest will be streamed live on ESPN+ as Coach Bobby Muuss' squad looks to continue their solid road work after earning a point at No. 21 Central Florida last weekend. Finally, Coach Randi Smart's volleyball team is off to Ames, Iowa for a trio of matches starting with the Cyclones at 7:30 p.m. Friday night and that match will be live on ESPN+ too.
It will be a quick turn for our crack operations, event management and fan experience staff from Saturday night's capacity crowd inside Allegacy to two big home contests at Spry and Kentner Stadium this Sunday afternoon. Coach Jen Averill and our No. 18 field hockey team has their home opener at 12 p.m. and remember, admission is FREE! This match is our annual Mental Health Awareness Game and your family-friendly dogs are welcome for Canines at Kentner! The fun continues at 2 p.m. just a few blocks away on our beautiful Reynolda Campus when women's soccer hosts UNC Asheville in its final non-conference tuneup.
'Gold Rush Childhood Cancer Game' Kicks Off at 7 p.m. This Saturday on ESPN2
Coach Dave Clawson's squad is ready to host its conference opener on Saturday night inside Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium. The Deacs have won seven of their last eight games against Virginia schools, including wins over UVA in 2021 in Charlottesville and 2020 in Winston-Salem.
In front of a nationally televised audience on ESPN2, we need Deacon Nation to bring the same fever that we all collectively witnessed on Opening Night last week. From community football legend Bill Hayes Opening the Gate pregame, to fans enjoying the new Deacon Hill Suites and Student Section Patios in Section 20 and an incredible joint halftime performance by Spirit of the Old Gold & Black and A&T's Blue & Gold Marching Machine at halftime – it was the perfect way to kick off the season. Wake is now 24-7 inside the friendly confines of Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium since 2019 and our 77.4 percent home win rate ranks third in the ACC during that period.
Saturday's game against the Hoos, which is presented by Allegacy Federal Credit Union and Strickland Brothers 10 Minute Oil Change, is Wake Forest's "Gold Rush" game. Fans are encouraged to watch this video recap of our football student-athletes visiting Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist's Brenner Children's Hospital back on Aug. 19. Deacon Nation can help us raise awareness for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month this month by purchasing this ticket package for $35 that includes a game ticket, commemorative gold t-shirt, a $20 gift card to Strickland Brothers Oil Change, and a $15 donation to Atrium Health Levine Children's Brenner Children's Hospital. Finally, Wake Forest is proud to host its partners friends from Atrium Health for the game this week too as Dr. Lindsay A. Thompson will serve as our Open the Gate honoree! With that, fans are encouraged to wear their favorite Wake Forest gold gear for this Gold Rush game.
Before we move on, you can invite a friend or neighbor to experience the action with a Bojangles 4-Pack ticket offering while supplies last. For questions or assistance, please contact the Wake Forest Ticket Office at 336-758-3322 ext. 1 or tix@wfu.edu. Regular office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Also, be sure and visit the Wake Forest Athletics gameday information website for a full timetable and schedule for the day and all our gameday policies and procedures for Allegacy Stadium.
ILC Leads the Way for the Deacs!
Beginning on Friday afternoon, we are also honored to host members of the Wake Forest Athletics International Leadership Circle for the 4th annual ILC Weekend. Since its inception in FY21, the ILC has grown from 121 to 300 members, all of who are giving at least $15,000 per year to the Deacon Club and our multiple sport-specific excellence funds. For more information about the ILC and how you can be a part of this leadership group, contact Executive Associate Athletic Director, Development and Sales Barry Faircloth, Senior Associate Athletic Director, Principal Gifts Mike Piscetelli or any of our outstanding Deacon Club development officers.
Wake Forest's School of Divinity Celebrates 25 Years of Transformative Theological Education
This academic year marks a remarkable milestone for Wake Forest's School of Divinity - 25 years of transformative theological education. Over the past quarter-century, this institution has profoundly shaped the spiritual and academic journeys of many students, fostering a community grounded in faith, inquiry, and justice.
And, as our traditional Friday "night before the game fireworks" light up the sky above Wait Chapel, let's give thanks for my friend and cabinet colleague Corey D. B. Walker, Dean of the School of Divinity, whose visionary leadership is elevating our community and enriching the student experience.

Forsyth County Benefits From Tourism Boom
Our friends and neighbors in Winston-Salem and our surrounding communities reaped the benefits from visitors to our county spending $1.05 billion in 2023, an increase of 6.9% from 2022. Specifically, visitor spending generated $72.6 million in state and local taxes and supported 6,753 jobs. Congratulations are in order to Visit Winston-Salem for their outstanding work to continue to promote all the special aspects of our community. I am especially proud of our Athletics staff, Wake's ASM Global partners, the City of Winston-Salem's Fairgrounds staff and the team behind the Winston-Salem Open who work together to produce 260 event days each year attracting over 750,000 attendees annually to the Deacon Boulevard area sports and entertainment district!
Cheers to starting our 2024-25 year strong last weekend and stay tuned for more news soon on transformational plans to further elevate the experience of local residents and visitors alike!

Before we close, here are today's Big 3 ways to help the Deacs:
- Join me in thanking our colleagues in the Office of Student Engagement and many other campus colleagues who helped our Athletics staff put on the annual Wake the Demons Pep Rally last Wednesday where more than 1,500 students attended. This annual event is so much fun and it was great to see the tremendous ovations for President Susan R. Wente, Ph.D., Dr. Shea Kidd Brown, Coach Dave Clawson, Coach Bobby Muuss and Coach Randi Smart. Remind your students to download the Screamin' Demon Rewards App and follow @ScrDemonRewards on X and @screamin_demons on Instagram for all the latest information for upcoming events, prizes, rewards and more.
- Let's congratulate men's cross country on continuing its national prominence, currently checking in at No. 19 in the national rankings. You can follow both our men's and women's runners on @WakeTrack for all the latest news, results and information. Our squads are off this weekend, but back in action in Boone on Friday, Sept. 13.
- With the recent releases of our women's tennis, men's golf and women's golf fall schedules, add their matches and tournaments you can attend to your calendars! Remember, even if the Deacs are on the road, even a few fans wearing their Old Gold & Black and cheering on our student-athletes can make a difference! With that said, make your Homecoming plans now for next weekend as the Deacs host Ole Miss from the Southeastern Conference at 6:30 p.m. for a nationally televised matchup on The CW.
Go Deacs!
