Dear Demon Deacon Nation:
As we start a new year, I continue to be grateful for the adaptability, flexibility, empathy and resilience shown by the extended Wake Forest and Winston-Salem community as we have navigated the COVID-19 pandemic together. With the recent case surge in our region putting more pressure on our healthcare system, fans attending our big men's basketball win this past Tuesday in Joel Coliseum noticed and responded positively to our increased emphasis on mask wearing.
It has been awesome to bring Deacon Nation back together in person to safely enjoy Wake Forest sports throughout this past fall semester. Thanks to widespread vaccinations and other steps we were able to safely host nearly 175,000 fans inside Truist Field this fall for six big wins as we enjoyed our record-setting football season, including ACC Atlantic Division and TaxSlayer Gator Bowl championships.
Additionally, we had a tremendous men's soccer season as Coach Bobby Muuss led the Deacs to their ACC-best 11th straight NCAA Tournament and USTFCCCA Southeast Region Coach of the Year John Hayes helped our men's cross country team earn an NCAA Top-10 finish! Not to be outdone, our women's soccer program went back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017!
With both our men's and women's basketball teams already eclipsing 12 wins and in the heat of ACC competition, we want to make sure we are doing everything we can to ensure Joel Coliseum is full of cheering Deacon fans down the stretch. At the same time, we must ensure we are doing our best to promote health and safety.
As such we have made the decision to implement a proof of COVID-19 vaccination or negative-test protocol for all indoor athletics events beginning with the Demon Deacons' home men's basketball game on Wednesday, Jan. 12 against Duke. Face masks will continue to be required and worn during all home indoor athletic events.
This additional step for Wake Forest indoor athletic events is consistent with the updated protocols for the spring semester outlined by Provost Rogan Kersh and Executive Vice President Hof Milam's recent message to the University community on Dec. 29. Thanks to the leadership of President Wente and strong vaccine and booster compliance among students, faculty and staff, Wake Forest will begin the spring semester on Monday with classes held in-person.
I encourage everyone to read our press release and FAQ announcement for more information and spread the word to your fellow fans. This policy applies to all fans ages 12 and older and will remain in effect until further notice.
We understand fans may have questions and I encourage you to email wfsports@wfu.edu, call the Wake Forest Ticket Office at 336-758-3322 ext. 1 during normal business hours, contact a Deacon Club staff member or your account executive.
And, as always, I personally read every email sent to wfuad@wfu.edu and I welcome your comments and suggestions.
Naturally we cannot guarantee 100% safety in any activity we choose to do whether it is riding a bike, driving a car in wintery weather or going out to eat. But as we carry on, we can take smart steps and continue to adhere to mask wearing, vaccination and boosting, testing when appropriate, contact tracing, and quarantine protocols.
As always we appreciate the collaborative spirit and support of all members of the extended Wake Forest community.
Men's Basketball Undefeated at Home; Women's Hoops Stellar 9-2 Inside Joel Coliseum
Following wins this week with the men's squad defeating Florida State on Tuesday and our women's team earning a tough road win at Miami last night, our hoops teams are both 2-2 in ACC play. Meanwhile, the Demon Deacons are a combined 18-2 at home this season!
Coach Steve Forbes' squad looks to remain unbeaten in their first 10 home contests for the first time since the 2013-14 season when Wake Forest hosts Syracuse tomorrow at 2 p.m. Meanwhile, Jen Hoover's team remains on the road and will travel to Tallahassee for a 2 p.m. tipoff on Sunday that will be broadcast on ACC Network Extra.
One of the major reasons our teams have been so successful this winter is because of the passionate support of our fans. Remember to mask up inside LJVM Coliseum and I ask you to be kind to our ushers as they remind everyone in attendance to do so when they are not actively eating or drinking.
If fans cannot attend any of our three home games in the next six days, we encourage you to transfer your game tickets to others who may attend or offer tickets for resale through StubHub, Wake Forest's official Fan to Fan Marketplace.
Remember, all guests are permitted to enter the building by showing a negative COVID test even if unable or unwilling to show vaccination status. Should a guest still choose to not attend, the Ticket Purchase Assurance (TPA) applies and refunds may be requested through the Wake Forest Ticket Office at 336-758-3322 or by emailing tix@wfu.edu.
Refunds are only available through Wake Forest for tickets purchased directly through the Wake Forest Ticket Office. Any refund request for tickets purchased through a third party must be managed through the source of purchase.
Meanwhile, stay tuned to GoDeacs.com and our social media platforms for all the latest men's and women's basketball news, including the rescheduling of our men's game against Boston College.
Old Town Club Receives National Recognition
Old Town Club, the home course of Wake Forest men's and women's golf and companion to the stunning Arnold Palmer Complex / Haddock House and Dianne Dailey Learning Center, has garnered special recognition from Golf Magazine.
In its annual ranking of the top 100 courses in the world, Old Town checked in at No. 92! The Perry Maxwell design that opened in 1939, which was given a makeover by Wake Forest graduate Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2013, is one of seven newcomers to the top 100 for the 2021-22 rankings and one of just two courses from North Carolina in the top 100.
We are looking for big accomplishments (and low scores) from both our nationally ranked programs this spring, as our No. 6 women's program will be led this spring by veterans Rachel Kuehn, Mimi Rhodes, Lauren Walsh and Vanessa Knecht. Coach Jerry Haas' No. 14 men's team will be led by sophomore Michael Brennan, who won two tournaments in a row in the fall, and seniors Alex Fitzpatrick and Parker Gillam.
Coach Walter Receives National Award
Although it was previously announced last July, head coach Tom Walter received the ABCA/Dave Keilitz Ethics in Coaching Award this weekend at the association's annual convention.
This prestigious honor is given annually to a coach who embodies the organization's core values of honesty, integrity, respect and personal responsibility. Coach Walter enters his 13th year as head coach this spring and garnered national recognition over the course of his tenure at Wake Forest as he selflessly donated a kidney to outfielder Kevin Jordan just days before the 2011 season opener. Nine years later, both Walter and Jordan came together to create Get in the Game, an organization aimed to enhance cross-racial communication for students.
The Diamond Deacs begin their official practice later this month and I can't wait to see our fans back inside Couch Ballpark for an exciting 2022 season!
