Good Morning Demon Deacon Nation!
When we introduced our new head men's basketball coach Steve Forbes to Deacon Nation on May 1, 2020, he talked about building a program that plays meaningful games in March. Only 22 months later, our team is doing just that as we prepare for our home finale tonight in Joel Coliseum against NC State!
But, before we discuss Senior Night for men's basketball, we are proud to welcome you to Women's History Month at Wake Forest! With the inauguration of Susan R. Wente, Ph.D. as Wake Forest's 14th President set for March 25, we will fittingly be making more history this month right here in Winston-Salem. And, our year long celebration of 50 Years of Women's Athletics continues with current Demon Deacons in lots of March action including our No. 5 ranked women's golf squad surging into first place and competing today to defend their title at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate. Among our history makers is Emilia Migliaccio, who is on the broadcast crew for the Golf Channel during the event. She is a model example of how to fully leverage the World Class Student-Athlete Experience afforded to her by Wake Forest. Take a moment to read her first-person story about her graduate student-experience.
And, at the end of this month we will all tune in to see Emilia, Rachel Kuehn, Carolina Chacarra and Lauren Walsh compete at the Augusta Women's National Amatuer! The Deacs are the only ACC institution, and one of just two schools nationally, with four qualifiers.
Meanwhile, we had a blast in February as Demon Deacons baseball is off to a 9-0 start for the first time since 1964, and we have had record-setting performances in track & field, on the golf course (men and women) and exciting victories for our No. 8 ranked men's and No. 18 ranked women's tennis teams! And, click here to see the archive of all the unique stories and content we shared throughout the 28 days of Black History Month.
With that, let's jump into the updates!
Senior Night on Deck for Historic Group of Demon Deacons
Wake Forest will face NC State in our men's basketball regular season finale tonight at 9 p.m. The Deacons will honor Anthony Mathis, Jr., Miles Lester, Dallas Walton, Khadim Sy, Daivien Williamson, Isaiah Mucius and Alondes Williams before the game so be sure to arrive early.
Just as in football last fall, every academic senior will go through tonight's ceremony to ensure that each individual has a special moment to be recognized by Deacon Nation, even though several have a year of eligibility remaining. By performing well in the classroom these student-athletes have created many future options, including the potential of returning for another season of competition and furthering their education. It's all part of taking full advantage of Wake Forest's World Class Student-Athlete Experience!
Today's game has historic implications as the Deacs can tie our single season record of 13 ACC wins previously set during the 2004-05 and 2002-03 seasons. Additionally, the home court advantage YOU have helped create has led to Wake Forest earning 15 home wins this season, one shy of tying the most in school history (also 2004-05, 2002-03). We're grateful to the Screamin' Demons student section, the Spirit of the Old Gold and Black, our cheer and dance squads, operations staff, gameday workers and the entire Winston-Salem and Triad community who brought energy to Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum each game!
Tickets to see this team one final time in Winston-Salem are available for just $40. And, next week, join us in Brooklyn next week for the 2022 New York Life ACC Men's Tournament in Brooklyn, N.Y. at the Barclays Center. Remember to stop by the official DEACTOWN Brooklyn tournament fan headquarters at Fulton Hall before and after all the action.
A Salute for Senior Christina Morra as the ACC Women's Hoops Tourney Tips Tonight
Despite a close loss to No. 22 Georgia Tech, Sunday's senior day inside Joel Coliseum was special as we honored Christina Morra. She has suited up in 104 games, starting 69 and scored 846 points for Wake Forest and currently ranks third in program history with a 51.1 shooting percentage.
Postseason play is here for our women's squad as the Deacs open the ACC Tournament with UVA this evening at 6:30 p.m. inside the Greensboro Coliseum looking to make a run to the quarterfinals for the third-straight season. With a win tonight the Deacons would advance to Thursday's 8:00 p.m. game in Greensboro.
Yesterday, Jewel Spear was named First Team All-ACC! Jewel's 18.38 points per game join men's star Alondes Williams (19.37) atop the respective ACC scoring charts positioning these two Demon Deacons to become just the fifth same-school women's and men's tandem ever to lead the league in scoring! Here is the list of historic ACC players to achieve this feat:
After a four-game weekend sweep of reigning America East Conference champions NJIT and a midweek victory over Elon on Tuesday, the Deacs are now 9-0 for the first time since the 1964 season. Wake Forest has outscored opponents 117-30 to open the new campaign, are batting .386 and hold a team ERA of just 2.62.
Our Diamond Deacs close out their 11-game homestand this weekend with Friday and Saturday contests at Couch Ballpark. Both games are slated to begin at 4 p.m., so get your tickets today!
Three School Records, Eight All-ACC Honorees Highlight ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships
It was an exciting weekend in Blacksburg, Va. for our men's and women's track & field teams at the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships! Join me in congratulating Joaquín Martínez de Pinillos in the men's 5,000m run (13:55.85), Thomas Kitchell in the men's shot put (19.45m) and Chanel Dawson in the women's shot put (16.30m) as they all set new school records!
Coach John Hayes and his staff continue to make strides growing our cross country and track & field programs! I look forward to watching our student-athletes compete as they move back outside for the spring.
Tennis & Men's Golf Roundup
Our No. 8 ranked men's tennis team is 15-0 at home (!) and our No. 18 women's tennis team has earned big wins over Texas Tech and South Carolina this spring. Both teams begin ACC play this weekend with Coach Jeff Wyshner's squad home this weekend versus Miami and FSU, while Coach Bresky's men hit the road to face those same Florida schools.
Coach Jerry Haas' No. 23 ranked men's golf team saw sophomore Clay Stirsman capture the Wolfpack Invitational title last Sunday in Raleigh. Two weeks ago sophomore Michael Brennan's captured medalist honors at the Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase where he also qualified for his first PGA Tour event with the win.
Speaking of golf, our entire University community is proud of Webb Simpson as he was elected Co-Chair of the Player Advisory Council for the PGA Tour.
Deacons Continue to Excel in Classroom
Deacon fans in Joel Coliseum tonight will have a chance to applaud Anya Brylin (women's tennis), Zach Facioni (men's cross country/track and field), and Shayla Smart (women's soccer) as Dr. Peter Brubaker and I escort them onto the court as Wake Forest's 2022 ACC Postgraduate Scholarship recipients!
These $6,000 postgraduate scholarships are awarded to superlative student-athletes who plan to pursue a graduate degree. Those honored have performed with distinction in both the classroom and their sport, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community.
While we are talking academics, let's hear it for the 162 student-athletes who earned Dean's List honors and the 24 who scored a perfect 4.0 GPA during the fall 2021 semester! Additionally, 312 out of 425 student‐athletes (73.4%) earned a place on the Athletics Director's Honor Roll List.
Truist Field, Winston-Salem Awaits Sir Paul McCartney GOT BACK Tour on May 21
Wake Forest University is honored to host the legendary Paul McCartney inside Truist Field on May 21! This exciting concert reflects our commitment to providing Value to Winston-Salem and the Triad. With a record crowd expected, we look forward to hosting fans for this world class event and the musical version of the Best Fan Experience in North Carolina!
