Balogh Family Continues Coaching & Directorship Initiative With Transformative Gift
In the continued effort to ensure Wake Forest is providing a World Class Student-Athlete Experience each day, Ed Balogh and his family have made a generous transformative gift for the Demon Deacons football program, furthering Wake Forest's initiative to sustain and elevate coaching or directorship positions through specific endowment gifts.
In gratitude for the generosity of Ed and his wife, Kathy, the position currently held by football's wide receivers coach Ari Confesor will be forever titled, The Balogh Family Football Assistant Coach for Wide Receivers Position.
Ed and Kathy's active leadership within the Wake Forest community continues to inspire generations of Demon Deacons. Specifically, this endowment gift allows us to enhance investments in performance training and technology, provide additional summer school and academic support, and recruit at an elite level. I deeply enjoy spending time with the Balogh's whose perspectives and values truly reflect the Pro Humanitate spirit of our University.
Legendary Demon Deacons Honored as Trailblazer Award Recipients
Wake Forest will celebrate and honor Sonya E Henderson and Keeva Jackson-Breland at the end of this month (October 27-29) as the University's latest Trailblazer Award honorees.
Henderson and Jackson-Breland were the first Black scholarship female athletes at Wake Forest, playing on the women's basketball team during the mid-1980s. This award was named in honor of the first Black football student-athletes to enroll at a Division I institution in the South – Robert Grant and Kenneth "Butch" Henry.
Being the first two Black female student-athletes at Wake Forest took tremendous courage and faith that their teammates, coaches and our University leadership and the Winston-Salem community would offer steady support during their time on our Reynolda campus. So many people played significant roles in their time at Wake Forest, but I want to recognize Dot Casey, Dr. Herman Eure, Wanda Briley, Lori Bailey and many others who were instrumental in bringing these two extraordinary women to Wake Forest and helping them find success during their time here. Their character, abilities, talents and fortitude allowed them to persevere and mark trails for future female student-athletes of color at Wake Forest.
Women's basketball alumni and interested members of our community who would like more information about the celebration weekend at the end of October should contact Assistant Director of Donor Engagement April Bass (abass@wfu.edu / 336-758-2588).
Finally, I encourage all fans to read these profiles of these trailblazing Demon Deacons:
Wake Forest football redshirt senior offensive lineman Michael Jurgens was named as a semifinalist for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy last week. Michael is the first two-time Campbell Trophy semifinalist in program history and is seeking to become the Deacs' first finalist since Ryan Javion in 2016.
Michael entered the 2022 season at Wake Forest as a three-time captain already having anchored an offensive line that has paved the way to the seven-straight bowl appearances, the Atlantic Coast Conference's second-longest active streak.
After graduating Magna Cum Laude, he earned his Masters of Business Administration and became the second active Wake Forest football student-athlete ever to do so. He is currently enrolled in the School of Professional Studies in the Project Management Certificate program which he will complete by the end of the 2023 fall semester.
Michael is a shining example of a student-athlete taking full advantage of all the opportunities at Wake Forest competitively, academically and socially!
