Happy #WFFriday Deacon Nation!
We trust you have already donned your Wake Forest Friday Old Gold & Black as you read this first 2024 edition of From the Quad! The new year is off to an exciting start with some recent news and victories that have brought tremendous Value to our Wake Forest, Winston-Salem and Triad Communities. This includes Mit Shah ('91), who generously made a $5 million transformational commitment that impacts all facets of our men's basketball program, nine victories in Coach Steve Forbes' squad last 10 outings, and the unveiling of our complete list of 2024 football season opponents and many future non-conference games.
But, before we dive deeper into those seismic news items, we have a BIG TIME home basketball game tomorrow afternoon against Virginia at 2 p.m. inside Joel Coliseum! Thanks to resurgent support over the last three years and the determination of Coach Forbes and his staff in putting an exciting team of highly competitive student-athletes on the floor, Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum has roared back to life and is one of the fiercest places to play in the country.
Did you know Wake Forest men's basketball is 40-5 inside the Joel since the start of the 2021-22 season and a perfect 9-0 record this season? On average, those nine home wins have been witnessed by 1,000 fans more per game than a year ago! Our facilities, operations and fan experience staff members are working creatively to continuously upgrade your experience and I appreciate you sharing your input and suggestions both via our postgame fan surveys and directly to me at wfuad@wfu.edu.
As Wake Forest students return to campus this weekend to begin second semester classes next Wednesday, we know that the Joel Coliseum atmosphere is going to ratchet up to another level. And, with Mit's support, and great collaboration among student leaders, our fan experience staff, VP for Campus Life, Dr. Shea Kidd Brown, and Executive Director of Student Engagement, Tim Wilkinson, more of our students are closer to the court than ever before and we will be announcing another new student experience next week to debut prior to the Louisville game on Saturday, Jan. 20.
Additionally, our new Super Fan Section behind the south baseline (apply here!) is helping drive the atmosphere, and remember, we also have an expanded gameday Deacon Shop in the entry atrium of the Joel Coliseum. I have seen lots of new Deacon fans getting outfitted there every pregame!
Having one of the biggest buildings in the ACC and all of college basketball means we still have room for you to invite a few friends and neighbors to experience the action, so get your tickets now and join the party for tomorrow, next Saturday's afternoon tipoff vs. Louisville and our remaining home games!
Mit Shah Launches Significant New Investment for Wake Forest Basketball
As announced yesterday on GoDeacs.com, Mit Shah and his family recently committed yet another transformational investment in Wake Forest. This $5 million gift intensifies Wake Forest's strategic pursuit of basketball excellence in a highly competitive landscape, and is providing head coach Steve Forbes and his staff even more momentum and broader means to invest in Wake's student-athlete experience, sports performance and wellness, and innovative, cutting-edge technology.
This commitment also included the creation of the "Shah Family Men's Basketball Scholarship" and will forever link the Shah Family with a player on the Men's Basketball team. This latest commitment and investment in basketball is designed to inspire the investments of many other loyal Deacon fans as a call to action for Wake Forest Basketball.
Any transformational movement must have a leader with vision, determination, and a relentless passion that paves the way to make success possible. Mit Shah is that special leader for Wake Forest basketball with incredible engagement and sacrificial generosity, which has inspired others to join in the restoration of Demon Deacons men's basketball to the level of prominence and success befitting its heritage. Whether elevating and driving the vision that led to the creation of the Shah Basketball Complex, the premier facility in all of college basketball, or reigniting our grassroots Winston-Salem basketball passion with the rebirth of Tie-Dye Nation, Mit is the consummate servant leader for our University. Game-by-game and night-by-night, we witness the movement growing and the engagement of Wake fans and students to levels not seen in over a decade. Coach Forbes, President Susan R. Wente, Ph.D., myself, and all of Deacon Nation are grateful for Mit's leadership.
While his leadership and drive has helped vault our program back into contention, in order to truly maximize our potential we need everyone in Deacon Nation to do their part! Whether it's taking advantage of our great schedule of Saturday games to get to Winston and attend "One More Game" than last year, buying an affordable Bojangles Four Pack for a basketball fan who's never been to the Joel, or just wearing your Old Gold & Black and supporting the Deacs on social media or when they are on the road, there are myriad ways to help!
We are extremely grateful to Mit and all our donors who have contributed to our program's on-and-off the court success, and are providing the Name, Image, and Likeness opportunities for Demon Deacon student-athletes, including through an independently owned collective (i.e. Roll The Quad), our group licensing programs, providing internships and other opportunities.
Allegacy Stadium to Host Seven Games in 2024, Deacs Have Nine Games in Home State!
As was shared Wednesday, we are fired up to confirm a big seven-game 2024 home schedule for Wake Forest football. Opening Night at Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium is set for Thursday, Aug. 29 and we are excited to host our Triad partner, North Carolina A&T! Additionally, Wake Forest will host likely preseason top-10 ranked Ole Miss on Saturday, Sept. 14 in a contest that our fans have been looking forward to for years. Because of Army's move to the American Athletic Conference, we had to do some juggling and I appreciate associate athletic director Jordan Jarry's excellent work to bring traditional Sun Belt Conference power Louisiana to Winston-Salem on Saturday, Sept. 28.
With that, UConn AD David Benedict showed gracious partnership in agreeing to a site flip of our previously scheduled series and we'll now visit Hartford and Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field on Saturday, Oct. 19, which will be a great opportunity for northeast Wake fans to catch the Deacs on the road.
We are back to a seven-home-game schedule as we announced in October that we will host Clemson, Duke, Virginia and Cal next fall. With ACC road games at NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill, we'll have nine total games in North Carolina and league trips to Stanford and Miami.
To assist your planning, we've also announced several future non-conference contests, including five season-openers, and tentative dates for our four 2025 non-conference games. Because of the aforementioned move by Army to the AAC, we'll now welcome the Black Knights to Winston-Salem in 2026 as we fondly remember the Deacs and Black Knights 70-56 shootout in 2021 at Michie Stadium and our 2022 victory in Winston-Salem.
2024 Football Season Tickets & Renewals On Sale Now!
Thanks to the leadership of Coach Clawson and his staff, talented play on the field by Wake Forest's student-athletes, and record breaking crowds and student attendance, the Demon Deacons are an astounding 23-7 at home inside Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium since 2019. Football season ticket sales and renewals are now underway and it's time to lock in your seat this fall! Remember, season tickets are the best way for fans to save and optimize the value of all of Allegacy Stadium's seating options. There are multiple exclusive benefits and renewal prizes for those who purchase season tickets that include access to the team, tickets to various away football games and much more.
Following a program record four sellouts last fall and with a great 2024 schedule, season tickets are available starting at just $149. Our excellent sales staff is available to assist you on the phone at 336.758.3322 ext. 1, or visit GoDeacs.com/Tickets to secure your seats!
Click here to see important upcoming dates and payment plans details. And, don't forget about our new Annual Seat Rights option that gives fans the ability to lock in their same seats on an annual basis without a multi-year commitment.
Welcome to Wake Forest, Scott Garrett!
As I shared last week, we are thrilled to welcome Scott, Kristy, Matthew and Audrey Garrett to Wake Forest. Scott is a servant leader who has proven his strategic assessment skills and a thoughtful management style in hiring successful head coaches and dozens of staff members in his nearly five years at Cleveland State. Scott will make his way down to Winston-Salem this weekend and be in the office Tuesday. He's the perfect complement to our veteran executive leadership team at Wake Forest as we work to continue to meet our goal of providing a World Class Student-Athlete Experience amidst a rapidly evolving intercollegiate athletics landscape.
ESPN and NCAA Reach New, Eight-Year Media Rights Agreement
Despite ongoing pressure on media and content providers, interest and passion for college sports continues to grow as evidenced by the NCAA and ESPN announcement of a new eight-year media rights agreement for 40 NCAA championships. This is an especially big deal for the ACC and Wake Forest - as our league is again on pace to win the most NCAA championships of any conference! Exposure for our incredible teams - such as Wake Forest baseball in the Men's College World Series last year - is another element of a World Class Student-Athlete Experience.
I commend NCAA President Charlie Baker and our partners at ESPN for this holistic model, which benefits student-athletes in all sports and helps sustain the future of our enterprise.
More Deacon Teams Swinging Back into Action
As we get rolling with the spring semester, our spring sports programs are beginning to get underway, beginning with our indoor track and field teams competing at the Virginia Tech Invitational today and tomorrow, and women's tennis beginning their spring season at the University of South Carolina's kickoff event. Competition will run from Saturday to Monday for Coach Jeff Wyshner's squad with our players having the opportunity to compete in both singles and doubles action.
Meanwhile, our men's tennis team opens up their 2024 spring season inside the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center with a pair of matches at 11 a.m. vs. ETSU and 5 p.m. against Elon. Admission is free to watch our No. 15-ranked squad. Stay tuned to @WakeMTennis and GoDeacs.com for more information.
State of North Carolina Among the Fastest-Growing in America
One of the key distinctives and advantages for Wake Forest University amongst the 68 Power 4 conference member schools is our prime location in the heart of North Carolina! New estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau shows North Carolina as the third-fastest growing state in the Union with an estimated population close to 11 million, a 1.3 percent increase from 2022.
With the Demon Deacons representing the fastest growing fan base in the Power 4 and more than 1.3 million people within 30 minutes of Joel Coliseum, Allegacy Stadium and David F. Couch Ballpark, as well as the City's fairgrounds and Annex, we look forward to continuing to provide Value to Wake Forest, Winston-Salem and the Triad with more than 750,000 patrons visiting for over 260 events per year!
Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Events Bring Deacons, Rams & City of Winston-Salem Together!
My Monday will begin at the Winston-Salem Chronicle and the Ministers' Conference annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Prayer Breakfast at the Benton Convention Center. If you've never attended, I encourage you to come be part of a special unity celebration! Demon Deacons Athletics will be in the house along with Chief Diversity Officer and Vice President of Diversity and Inclusion, José Villalba to hear the keynote address from retired executive director of the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation, Maurice "Mo" Green.
Later on Monday afternoon, Wake Forest and Winston-Salem State will continue our two-decades long collaboration of events honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with the annual 'Building the Dream' awards reception at 4 p.m. inside Bridger Field House and before transitioning to Dillard Auditorium at WSSU for the 7:00 p.m. evening address by Danya Perry. For more information or to attend these inspiring events, please contact Jalen Shell from the Wake Forest Intercultural Center (shellj@wfu.edu).
Following Big Crowd at Joel Coliseum Thursday, Women's Hoops Hits Road for Louisville
Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum was alive yesterday as we welcomed 5,863 students from 32 schools in the Forsyth County area for our annual School Day Game with the Deacons squaring off vs. Syracuse. Although the result was not in our favor, the School Day Game is one of my favorite events of the year. The Deacs have one of the nation's toughest schedules and I'm proud of the resolve of Coach Megan Gebbia and our team as they hit the road to No. 15 Louisville for a 2 p.m. Sunday tipoff on ACCN before traveling to Boston College for a Thursday matchup next week. The Deacs are back home on Sunday, Jan. 21 as they host Notre Dame at 2 p.m.
