Good Afternoon Demon Deacon Nation,
It's a big DEACTOWN Thursday as three Demon Deacon alums are on the course at Augusta continuing the longtime Wake Forest presence at the Masters, while tonight at 6 p.m. we renew one of America's oldest college sports rivalries as Coach Tom Walter's ballclub takes on the No. 16 UNC Tar Heels at Boshamer Stadium before a live ACC Network audience in the first of a crucial three game weekend series. The weather forecast changed the schedule, so check here for more details for Game 2 on Saturday and Game 3 on Sunday of this seismic series.
Meanwhile, the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season men's tennis title comes down to a Big Four showdown on Saturday in Raleigh as Coach Tony Bresky's undefeated No. 1 ranked squad takes on fifth-ranked NC State, who is 20-4 and a perfect 12-0 in ACC play.
Saturday's huge match between the Deacs and Wolfpack is set for 5 p.m. at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh and the match is FREE for all fans. The Deacs are coming off another dominating weekend in which they dispatched four opponents including ACC wins over SMU and Boston College, and are stunning 32-0 on the season. It was fun to join President Susan R. Wente in honoring our seniors after Sunday's win over the Eagles.
Our state is the heart and home of the Atlantic Coast Conference and you can take in the best of college tennis at the men's and women's conference tournaments at Cary Tennis Park beginning next week.
And, starting on Wednesday next week, just about 29 miles from our own Arnold Palmer Golf Complex, our No. 9 ranked women's golf team will begin play at the ACC Championships at Sedgefield Country Club looking to defend their 2024 crown! Leading the Deacs on the links will be senior Carolina Chacarra who is coming off a top-10 finish at the Augusta National Women's Amatuer!
Whether you are in the Triangle, Triad or elsewhere in range of I-40, remember that your energy cheering on the Demon Deacons can help Wake Forest Win Championships!
While the Deacons are battling for championships on the fields, courses and courts, college sports continues to spend lots of time in the legal arena too, and this past Monday featured the much awaited House vs. NCAA settlement hearing, as Judge Claudia Wilken spent her day listening to questions and criticism of the proposed master settlement. As we shared back in November, this decision represents a fundamental restructuring of how Division I institutions operate. In anticipation of her written opinion and decision we are hard at work preparing for the opportunities that will come with the national revenue sharing "cap." Stay tuned!
And now let's move onto the rest of the updates in this 146th edition of From the Quad!
Exciting Football, Track & Baseball Contests Await Winston-Salem Next Weekend
We're just about a week away from your first chance to see Coach Jake Dickert's Demon Deacons in action! Join us next Saturday, April 19 at 3 p.m. at Allegacy Stadium for our FREE Spring Showcase — featuring on-field action, fan giveaways, and postgame autographs with players and coaches. Come early for pre-event fun at 1:30 p.m. in the DEACTOWN Fan Zone on Deacon Hill — with rally towels (courtesy of Allegacy Federal Credit Union), inflatables, face painting, and more. With that, please email wffanexp@wfu.edu for more details on how to get involved in these activities.
Meanwhile, our Diamond Deacs return to the friendly confines of David F. Couch Ballpark next week for a five-game homestand beginning with a midweek contest on Tuesday, April 15 against Coastal Carolina at 6 p.m. and the week rounds out with a three-game series with Boston College that begins on Thursday at 6 p.m., continues on Friday at 6 p.m. and concludes on Saturday with a noon first pitch. Fans can make it a full day of Demon Deacons action on April 19 by snagging the $14 Spring Game & Baseball package, which includes a signed Coach Dickert poster and Wake Forest socks. The homestand concludes on Tuesday, April 22 when Liberty comes to Winston-Salem for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
Coach Tom Walter's ballclub is coming off non-conference wins over High Point and UNCG in recent weeks and last weekend the Deacs earned a huge series win down at No. 4 Florida State!
Not to be overlooked next week, Coach John Hayes and our track & field programs are excited to host the third annual Wake Forest Invitational at Kentner Stadium Friday, April 18. Admission is FREE, and fans can look forward to engaging activities such as the student 4x100 relay race and the alumni mile. We anticipate welcoming back numerous track & field and cross country alumni, with their tailgate set up on the patio outside the Miller Center. Alumni and current student-athlete parents can register / RSVP here. Additionally, we'll honor 16 seniors and graduates with a special ceremony on the track at 5:40 p.m. on Friday. Please be aware that the event will feature the use of a starter gun throughout the day. Stay tuned to GoDeacs.com and @WakeTrack for more details. Meanwhile, the Deacs compete this weekend at the Duke Invitational.
Finally, don't forget about the Deacon Blvd. Road Closure and take a look at our updated parking map as you're coming to events in the area surrounding The Grounds.
Men's Golf Captures Top-Five Finish, ACC Championships Next
Wake Forest men's golf secured its seventh top-five finish of the season at the Calusa Cup in Naples, FL. The Deacs closed with a 285 (-3) to finish fifth overall—beating out top-10 teams No. 4 LSU and No. 8 Virginia. Senior Marshall Meisel led the way, tying for 14th with three consistent rounds of 73-72-72. Junior Jakob Melin and senior Scotty Kennon each fired two-under 70s in the final round, finishing tied for 21st and 24th, respectively. That was our squads final tune-up before the ACC Men's Golf Championships that are set for April 24-27 in Bowling Green, Ky. at The Club at Olde Stone.
Coach Clawson to Speak at Salvation Army Gala
Tonight Coach Dave Clawson is taking a break from his sabbatical to be the featured speaker at the Salvation Army of Greater Winston-Salem's Hands & Hearts Gala. The event, held at the Ken Carlson Red Shield Youth Center, is the organization's largest annual fundraiser and will bring the community together to support critical programs for local families and youth.
We're proud to see Coach Clawson continuing to fulfill the Pro Humanitate motto of Wake Forest as his leadership and voice remain valuable parts of our community. For more information, visit salvationarmyws.org.
PwC Senior Partner Paul Griggs Comes Home for Fireside Chat at the School of Business
I recently had the opportunity to join Wake Forest alumnus and PwC U.S. Senior Partner, Paul Griggs, for a Fireside Chat with students in our School of Business, including several student-athletes. Since earning his B.S. and M.S. in accounting from Wake Forest nearly 30 years ago, Paul has steadily risen inside the world's second largest professional services firm, and was elected - by 4,500 fellow partners - to the leadership post of PricewaterhouseCoopers U.S. last year! Paul's professional accomplishments reflect the national respect for Wake Forest's top ranked academic program, and his desire to share his time with Demon Deacon students is testament to his own Pro Humanitate spirit.
Whitaker Park Transformation a Win for Winston-Salem and Wake Forest
On Tuesday, I had the honor of joining community and city leaders for the ribbon cutting of the Lofts at Whitaker Park, a new residential development marking a major milestone in the continued revitalization of the historic former R.J. Reynolds campus. The project is the latest success of the Whitaker Park Development Authority (WPDA), on whose Board Executive Vice President Jakie Travisano and I proudly serve. I had the fortune of touring these historic warehouses in the early stages of their conversion a few years ago and it is incredible to see the transformation of the spaces into some of the coolest in town - especially the great rooftop terrace views of our sports complex and The Grounds construction site!
Developed by Frye Properties, the Lofts at Whitaker Park adds much-needed residential space to the area and reflects the power of public-private partnerships to reimagine legacy assets into vibrant, mixed-use spaces. The Lofts at Whitaker Park is also a partner of Wake Forest Athletics and a handful of Demon Deacon student-athletes reside there — another example of how the University's relationships continue to bring shared value to our campus and community.
From the Quad Big 3
Finally, here are today's Big 3 ways to help the Deacs:
And, thank you for all the ways you support Wake Forest University as we're extremely grateful to the over 2,700 alumni, parents and fans who made philanthropic gifts to Wake Forest on its annual Deacs Day of Giving this past Tuesday. If you missed Tuesday, it's not too late, as you may still make your gift at www.deaconclub.com.
As always, please continue to send your thoughts, ideas and suggestions to me at wfuad@wfu.edu, and …

Finally, here are today's Big 3 ways to help the Deacs:
- It's never too early to make your plans to join us this fall inside Allegacy Stadium for the 2025 season. New season tickets start at just $149 and fans can call 336.758.3322 ext. 1 or visit GoDeacs.com/Tickets with any questions and to purchase today as our priority renewal deadline is Monday next week! With that, Athletics recently introduced upgraded seating options in the Touchdown Club at Allegacy Stadium, including reserved barstool seats with a drink rail and tables. Fans can also continue to purchase reserved chair-back seats and concourse-level tables outside the Snead Room indoor club space.
- Read about how seven-time Emmy Award-winning Sesame Street writer William Electric Black visited Winston-Salem this week as part of a powerful community engagement initiative led by Wake Forest's Center for Literacy Education. Black read his children's book A Gun is Not Fun to local kindergarten students and served as the keynote speaker at the Center's inaugural Visiting Scholars Speaker Series and Community Networking Conference – another good example of the Skip Prosser Literacy Program led by Dr. Alan Brown!
- Each spring, Wake Forest students stay awake and on their feet for 12-straight hours for the Wake 'N Shake Dance Marathon benefitting the Brian Piccolo Cancer Research Fund and the Comprehensive Cancer Center at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist. A few weeks ago, this annual event was held and our own Coach Jake Dickert and the football team was in attendance for this important cause!
