Good Afternoon Demon Deacon Nation!
Homecoming is upon us and we are excited to see all our Wake Forest alumni roll in for an action-packed weekend which we will preview in greater detail later in this letter.
And, wow! How 'bout those Demon Deacons? I'm talking of course about yesterday's come-from-behind 2-1 women's soccer win over Pitt in the Steel City that followed a shutout victory over Big Four rival NC State last Thursday in Spry Stadium. Coach Tony DaLuz's squad is now 14-3 and getting ready to head to South Bend for Thursday's regular season finale. With a 6-3 conference record, the Deacs have qualified for the six-team ACC Tournament for the first time since 2017. Thursday's match at Notre Dame will decide whether we will host an opening round match and you can watch it on ACC Network Extra! Individually, freshman Nikayla Small was recently invited as one of only 26 players to join the Canadian Women's National Team on its two match Celebration Tour.
We also won another tackle football game at Army last Saturday. Before we talk about an incredible afternoon in West Point, let's get to some other news.
Since I last wrote to you From the Quad, our University has had a busy October beginning with our community raising over $200,000 at the annual Hit the Bricks event for the Brian Piccolo Fund; the Divinity School held its annual Family Weekend Worship Service on Oct. 5 that you can view here; an impressive 135 students presented findings of their mentored scholarship at Undergraduate Research Day; Winston-Salem's Innovation Quarter marked a year of creative collaborations between Wake Forest and New York City's New Museum with an outdoor festival known as IdeasCityWS; and, President Wente hosted Atrium Health President and CEO Eugene Woods on our beautiful Reynolda Campus last week.
October has literally been a banner month competitively as well! We recently honored Anya Brylin and Brooke Killingsworth's history-making October 10th ITA national title with a banner above the entrance of Manchester Athletic Center. When you see Anya or Brooke around campus, be sure to congratulate them! Both our men's and women's team were back in ITA action this past week.
Along with Big 4 wins in field hockey, men's soccer and women's soccer over the last few weeks, Athletics honored the legacy of head field hockey coach Jen Averill with an alumni gathering after the Deacs match on Oct. 15 as we celebrated her 30th year of coaching at Wake Forest. The international impact of Wake Forest field hockey will be represented by junior Nat Friedman who has been selected to Team USA's roster for the 2021 Junior World Cup from Dec. 5-16 in Potchefstroom, South Africa.
BOOM! Football Deacs Strike for 70 points at Army to Improve to 7-0, Rise to No. 13 Nationally
It's been a while, specifically since 1944, that the Deacs have been 7-0. Thanks to an incredible performance by Walter Camp Offensive Player of the Week Sam Hartman and his teammates, Wake Forest football has a chance to make history this coming Saturday in Truist Field. Meanwhile, Coach Dave Clawson's No. 13-ranked Demon Deacons have achieved Wake's highest Associated Press football ranking since 1947 and are the only undefeated team in the ACC Atlantic Division.
Fittingly in a game that set the all time combined scoring record for Army's historic Michie Stadium, it was an incredible defensive play by Traveon Redd that altered the course of the game and helped the Deacons triumph.
Wake Forest is 13-2 inside Truist Field over the past three seasons and the Deacs are tied for the second-most wins in the league since the start of the 2017 season. Listen to this special invitation from Coach Clawson to help our Demon Deacons finish the season strong and keep that incredible home field advantage! Additionally, I encourage you to watch this impactful video piece on Sam Hartman and his family from ESPN College GameDay last weekend.
The Big Four Championship is on the line over the next three weeks with our final two home games against Duke and NC State sandwiched around a trip to Chapel Hill. While our extremely popular four-pack tickets with complimentary parking are sold out, fewer than 50 four-pack tickets without parking are available for $99 each. Individual tickets for Saturday's game begin at $20. Additionally, we have a Duke-NC State combo ticket for only $80 and you can add in a road ticket for the UNC game as well.
Saturday's 4:00 p.m. Homecoming kickoff against Duke will also serve as the Demon Deacons Youth Sports Day. Special tickets including a food voucher are available with the pregame festivities including a block party featuring live music, inflatables, games, activities, food trucks and more! Also, participating kids are invited to take the field postgame and there are exclusive video board features for teams and organizations who attend together.
Additionally, Wake Forest Athletics will host its annual Church Day at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum before the game. A great deal on a ticket and lunch package is available along with a postgame photo opportunity on the field.
Welcome Home! Exciting & Fun-Filled Homecoming Sports Weekend Awaits…
We are gearing up for a big Homecoming weekend packed with plenty of opportunities to cheer on the Deacs in various sports! We salute the Office of Student Engagement and the Wake Forest Alumni Office for their partnership creating a memorable student, alumni and community Homecoming experience!
Field hockey hosts Boston College at 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon inside Kentner Stadium. Admission is FREE for the program's annual Senior Day as Wake Forest looks to improve its seed for next week's ACC Tournament. Then at 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium, our men's soccer team hosts Syracuse on its senior night as the Deacs fight to host an ACC Tournament game.
Friday night concludes with the men's and women's basketball Deacon Jam! at 9:30 p.m. inside Varsity Arena in Reynolds Gymnasium. Students can claim their spot for this unique and fun event through the Screamin Demon Rewards App.
Additionally, prior to Saturday's football game against Duke, the women's basketball team will host a free open intrasquad scrimmage from 1-2 p.m. inside Joel Coliseum. Deacon Nation is encouraged to stop by prior to tailgating inside the DEACTOWN Fan Zone presented by Forsyth County Farm Bureau Insurance to get their first look at Jen Hoover's 2021-22 team.
No. 18 Men's & No. 9 Women's Golf Continue Strong Fall Play
Wake Forest's women's golf team and junior Rachel Kuehn swept both the team and individual titles two weeks ago at the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invite. Rachel set the women's course record, Wake Forest's 18-hole record and the tournament single-round record on day two of the event with a bogey-free, 9-under-par 63, helping lead the Deacons to a 10 stroke victory.
On the men's side, senior Alex Fitzpatrick placed second at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate this past weekend! Also this fall. Fitzpatrick and sophomore Michael Brennan shared a win at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational and Brennan earned medalist honors at the Colonial Collegiate.
Finally, we are proud of former WGCA All-American Allison Emrey who recently earned her Tour card for the LPGA Tour 2022 season. A 2015 computer science graduate of Wake Forest, Allison earned her first Symetra Tour victory in 2021 on her way to an eighth-place finish for the year in the Symetra Tour standings!
Harriers Set for ACC Championships
Let's all wish our Demon Deacon cross country teams good luck in our first Atlantic Coast Conference Championship of the year on Friday morning in South Bend, Indiana. The event will be streamed live on ACC Network Extra with the women's 6K race beginning at 10 a.m. and the men's 8k race starting at 11 a.m..
President Wente, Tim Duncan & Chris Paul Recognized
Did you see that President Susan R. Wente, Ph.D. was named a 2021 Power Player by the Triad Business Journal? Meanwhile Tim Duncan and Chris Paul were named as two of the NBA's 75 greatest players of all time. Wake Forest is one of just three ACC schools to have two former student-athletes on this esteemed list.
Delayed by the Pandemic, A 50 Year Celebration
On Saturday, check out the videoboard as we will celebrate the 50th anniversary of our 1970 ACC Championship (one year late due to the pandemic). This group of men proved it could be done and hold an amazing lasting bond from that special season that we all remember so foundly!
