Good Afternoon Demon Deacon Nation,
While Wake Forest undergraduates attack midterms and finish up papers ahead of spring break, let's first look back on last Friday night's powerful Hall of Fame induction ceremony and then update you on breaking ACC news.
First, the stars were in the house - Bridger Field House that is - a few days ago as we inducted an incredible Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame class. A packed Norman Snead Club Room honored an exceptional group, including legendary women's soccer star and longtime NWSL goalkeeper Aubrey Bledsoe Kingsbury, standout Wake Forest and MLS defender Ike Opara, stalwart Demon Deacon and NFL fullback Ovie Mughelli, 2023 Trailblazer Award recipient Keeva Jackson-Breland, renowned golf course designer Bill Coore, 14-year NBA veteran and Wake Forest basketball alum Ish Smith, 2011 ACC Women's Golf Individual Champion Cheyenne Woods, and one of the best defensive backs in ACC history, Alphonso Smith. The late Skip Prosser was also inducted, with his wife, Nancy, and former player, Alan Williams, sharing heartfelt remarks on behalf of the beloved 2003 ACC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year. Additionally, longtime administrator Lynne Heflin was honored as the Gene Hooks Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.
While their collective careers include many competitive honors, the best part of Friday's ceremony was the emotional, eloquent and grateful testimonials from each inductee.
Sitting on the stage next to Dr. Peter Brubaker, who is the Chair of the Wake Forest Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee and our Faculty Athletics Representative, and adjacent to the podium, I had an unique view of the joy and pride on faces of the family, friends, former teammates and coaches of our honorees.
The essence of what I witnessed Friday night was captured in a note I received from a faithful Deacon fan as he explained the event to a friend:
The Wake Hall of Fame dinner was an event… that could happen at very few Universities. Maybe only at Wake. The inductees were all colors, all walks of life, all ages from a current NWSL goalkeeper in her early 30's to legendary golf designer Bill Coore, who is 78.
They all had the following in common:

ACC Strengthened with Resolution of Lawsuits & Extended ESPN Contract
Since President Harold Tribble and athletics director Jim Weaver helped launch the Atlantic Coast Conference and Wake Forest University became a charter member in 1953, ACC membership and our presence among the highest level of college athletics competition has been a key element of Wake Forest's identity as a leading national university. And, epitomized by Friday's Hall of Fame ceremony, it's been a great platform for incredible championship performances by Demon Deacons.
Earlier today, the ACC Board of Directors announced resolution of the lawsuits filed against the league by Florida State University and Clemson University in 2023 and 2024, respectively. This important step follows the recent news of ESPN and the ACC's enhanced commitment to our anchor media rights agreement through 2035-36.
As we navigate a disrupted higher education and intercollegiate athletics landscape, there is no question that these issues have been a major distraction over the last several years. With these distractions eliminated we can turn our full collective effort building on the ACC's cumulative total of 189 team NCAA titles and 428 individual national championships to strengthen our competitive position, deliver an exceptional experience for student-athletes and fans alike, and enhance revenue to support the work of our institutions.
A pivotal and innovative component of today's settlement news is a modernized model of media rights revenue distribution which will take into account total annual viewership in football and basketball. This model creates a closer link to the value of the overall ACC media contracts to the relative value of individual school brands, particularly in football and men's basketball. Although historical brand value will always be a factor, winning today matters, as the most competitive teams are more likely to be selected for the highest-distribution platforms (i.e. ABC, ESPN), and earn the largest visibility - and a higher share of league revenue.
Not surprisingly, Wake Forest will be among the six to eight ACC schools whose average media revenue share declines next year, the first in which the new formula applies. The names of the schools whose revenue increases won't be surprising either.
But, and more importantly, the solidification of the ACC protects Wake Forest's position among Power Four of college athletics, and, as the ACC, along with the SEC, Big Ten and Big 12 continues to take the leadership role in determining the parameters of the new era of college athletics, we are at the table. One only has to look back at the collapse of the PAC-12 in 2023 to understand how important that is!
Overall, the value of the ACC's media rights contracts are ahead of the Big 12 and trail the SEC and Big Ten. And, the "success-initiative" formula launched last year rewards schools for postseason achievements and gives additional opportunity to generate more resources.
The same comparative advantages that have always enabled Wake Forest to achieve at high levels will continue to be the backbone of our competitive success. Having the most money, the highest payroll or biggest stadiums has never been among those advantages for the Demon Deacons. Instead, we have operated intentionally, efficiently and intelligently, and relied on our institution's distinctive characteristics— academic prestige, a vibrant and relational living-learning community that facilitates personal connections, ideal location in Winston-Salem and the state of North Carolina, a passionate and generous fan base, and prioritized strategic investments to win 10 NCAA team national championships and 59 ACC team titles, including Men's Cross Country and Men's Soccer trophies last fall – the first two ACC Championships crowned in the new 18 school conference!
Thanks to you, Wake Forest is stronger and more nationally relevant than at any point in our history. Let's keep pressing forward … together!
Momentum Continues as Top-Ranked Men's Tennis Sweeps No. 6 Stanford and No. 22 Cal
February was highlighted by Wake Forest's second ITA National Team Indoor Championship in program history, including in a thrilling 4-3 title match victory over TCU in Dallas. Graduate standout Stefan Dostanic delivered the match-clinching win on court one, securing Wake Forest's place among just 13 schools with multiple ITA National Indoor titles and one of only six ACC programs to achieve the feat.
That momentum carried into an incredible opening weekend of ACC play with bolterious crowds at Leighton Family Courts and inside the Indoor Tennis Center as the Deacs dispatched of No. 6 Stanford and No. 22 Cal. Coach Tony Bresky's squad is now 19-0 this season and continues the best start in our historic program's history. The Deacs hit the road this weekend for matches at UVA and Virginia Tech and they next compete at home on Friday, March 14 against Miami! Remember, home tennis matches are FREE for all those in our community.
Big Deacon Weekend On Deck With Men's Basketball Home Finale, No. 12 Baseball ACC Series Opener & Women's Tennis Clashes with the Commonwealth
For the third time in four seasons men's basketball has reached the 20-win mark and at 12-7 in league play is a half-game out of fourth place in the ACC standings ahead of Saturday's 2:15 p.m. regular season finale against Georgia Tech. As Coach Forbes steadily builds the Wake Forest program back to national relevance, over the last four seasons (2022-25) the Deacons have averaged 21 overall wins per year compared to the 12 total annual wins averaged in the 2011-2021 seasons. With six road ACC wins this year, including being the only team in the conference to sweep the West Coast (Stanford and Cal) road trip, a home triumph over North Carolina and neutral site wins over Michigan and Minnesota, there have been some great moments for the Deacons, but we certainly aren't yet where we want to be as a program.
Despite some heartbreaking setbacks, I'm proud of the continued fight and looking forward to the clash vs. the surging Yellow Jackets Saturday. Get there early to salute our six seniors including three-year starter and four-year Demon Deacon Cameron Hildreth! Last Saturday's grinding comeback over Notre Dame, including a 19-for-19 free throw performance by the Deacs, and clutch shots by Cameron and Hunter Sallis to close out the win was a harbinger of March - gut it out and find a way to win.
Beyond the exciting hoops matchup inside Joel Coliseum, Coach Jeff Wyshner's women's tennis team, who earned a big-time win at Louisville on Sunday, returns to the Wake Forest Tennis Complex for a 4 p.m. match on Friday vs. UVA. Additionally, the Deacs host Virginia Tech on Sunday and remember that all our home tennis matches are FREE.
Finally, our weekend includes our ACC opening series inside David F. Couch Ballpark as the No. 15 ranked Deacs, who are 10-3, host Notre Dame for three games. Friday's first pitch is set for 6 p.m., Saturday's game begins at 5 p.m. and Sunday's series finale will start at 1 p.m. Junior Marek Houston is the pacesetter and has garnered ACC Player of the Week honors already. Remember, you can save $5 by buying your tickets online before arriving at Couch Ballpark.
As always, for questions or assistance, please contact the Wake Forest Ticket Office at 336-758-3322 ext 1 or tix@wfu.edu. Regular office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Wake Forest Names Residence Hall in Honor of Larry and Beth Hopkins
At Founders Day on February 20, President Susan R. Wente announced that South Hall will be renamed Dr. Larry D. Hopkins and Professor Beth N. Hopkins Hall, honoring two extraordinary Demon Deacons whose servant leadership and trailblazing spirit exemplify Pro Humanitate.
Beth Hopkins ('73), a distinguished attorney and educator, was one of the first Black female residential students at Wake Forest. Her late husband, Dr. Larry Hopkins ('72, MD '77), was a star tailback, Wake Forest's first Black chemistry major, then a medical school faculty member, who as an OB-GYN elevated healthcare outcomes for generations of women in Winston-Salem. Both - as students, faculty members, and trustees—have enriched Wake Forest and Winston-Salem in immeasurable ways.
Each August, 200 new first year Demon Deacon students will make Hopkins Hall their first Wake Forest home, a lasting tribute to two of my favorite all-time Wake Foresters.
Celebrations, Ceremonies, and Reunions Spotlight Wake Forest's Remarkable Legacies
In addition to the Hall of Fame, over the winter our talented events, operations, development, facilities, creative and communications staff members have worked faithfully to create memorable moments stewarding the relationships which make Wake Forest unique. The Scholarship Celebration, Tucker Student-Athlete Excellence Center Dedication, Pete Moffitt Courage Award Ceremony that honored Bill Stines, and the Robert Grant & Kenneth "Butch" Henry Trailblazer Ceremony where we recognized Bill Hayes and posthumously honored Audley Bell all have been remarkable events. We also had a great weekend of basketball alumni reunions, including the 25-year anniversary of our 2000 NIT Championship Team.
The stories shared by esteemed alumni, community members, and Wake Forest legends at these special events are what make Wake Forest truly unique!
New Volleyball Leader Hulsmeyer Moving Fast
I'm fired up about our new head volleyball coach Jeff Hulsmeyer who has hit the ground running with a transfer signing while welcoming a pair of talented coaches to his staff with Sherisa Livingston and Triplette Family Volleyball Assistant Coach Tina Readling! Coach Hulsmeyer has also announced that Drew Langston will continue as an Assistant Coach. Come check out a spring volleyball match and if you see Coach H around campus, stop him and introduce yourself!
Podium Finishes Highlight ACC Indoor Championships While Golf Swings in South Carolina
Our Wake Forest indoor track and field teams had some tremendous performances at the ACC Championships in Louisville, Ky. Among the many standouts, the Demon Deacons were paced - literally - by senior Luke Tewalt as he reset his own school record in the 3,000m run! Meanwhile on the links in South Carolina, both Wake Forest golf teams competed over the last few days with the men placing third at the Colleton River Collegiate as senior Scotty Kennon picked up his fifth top-5 finish of his senior season. On the women's side, Coach Kim Lewellen's squad just opened play yesterday at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate.

Finally, here are today's Big 3 ways to help the Deacs:
A lifelong baseball fan, Michele formed a deep connection with the Demon Deacons during their 2023 College World Series run. This season, Wake Forest Baseball pays tribute to Michele with a commemorative "MM" on our helmets and the outfield wall at David F. Couch Ballpark. To learn how you can join Bob in supporting Wake Forest Baseball in Michele's honor, contact Executive Associate Athletic Director, Development and Sales Barry Faircloth at fairclbw@wfu.edu or 336-758-4961.

- They loved Wake and made that clear in powerful ways.
- They had lasting relationships with coaches, academic counselors, professors…and called them out by name.
- They had great athletic or sports-related accomplishments after Wake.
- They had stable, seemingly happy lives. The room was filled with wives, husbands, children.
- It was actually pretty stunning. 10 honorees. Nothing resembling a dud or low point in the evening. One wonderful, grateful, funny, engaging human after another.
